Position Overview:

The Technical Superintendent will be responsible for managing the technical performance, maintenance, and compliance of assigned vessels. This role involves ensuring the vessels operate efficiently, safely, and in accordance with international regulations. The Technical Superintendent will also lead vessel repair and maintenance projects, manage budgets, and support crew training and development.


Key Responsibilities:

Vessel Management:

  • Monitor and manage the technical performance of assigned vessels to ensure efficient operation, safety, and compliance with operational and environmental regulations.
  • Conduct regular vessel inspections and audits to assess the condition, safety, and seaworthiness of vessels.
  • Liaise with ship captains, crew, and onshore support teams to ensure smooth operations and address technical issues.

Maintenance and Repairs:

  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise routine and emergency repairs, dry docking, and maintenance activities.
  • Ensure all repairs and maintenance activities comply with international regulations, classification society requirements, and company policies.
  • Evaluate and approve repair and maintenance work performed by external contractors and service providers.

Budgeting and Cost Control:

  • Prepare and manage the maintenance budget for each vessel, ensuring cost-effective operations without compromising on quality or safety.
  • Monitor operating expenses related to spare parts, consumables, and repairs, ensuring timely procurement and effective inventory management.

Compliance and Documentation:

  • Ensure compliance with international and local maritime regulations (e.g., SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM Code).
  • Oversee the maintenance of accurate records related to repairs, inspections, certifications, and vessel performance.
  • Ensure all relevant certificates, class surveys, and audits are up to date.

Crew Training and Support:

  • Provide technical guidance and support to shipboard crew to ensure they are proficient in the vessels systems and machinery.
  • Organize training sessions and safety drills to maintain a high level of competence and safety among the crew.

Project Management:

  • Lead special projects related to vessel upgrades, retrofits, or modifications, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and in line with technical specifications.
  • Collaborate with shipyards, contractors, and classification societies to coordinate vessel construction or modification projects.

Incident Investigation and Reporting:

  • Investigate technical incidents, accidents, or failures onboard and recommend corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
  • Provide detailed reports of incidents to senior management and relevant authorities as required.

Vendor and Supplier Relations:

  • Manage relationships with suppliers, shipyards, and service providers to ensure high-quality, timely, and cost-effective services.
  • Evaluate and negotiate contracts with suppliers and external contractors to ensure competitive pricing and service delivery.

Performance Optimization:

  • Monitor vessel performance, including fuel consumption and machinery efficiency, identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Implement technical innovations and initiatives to improve energy efficiency and reduce operating costs.

Desired Profile:

  • Qualifications: Bachelors degree in Marine Engineering. Chief Engineer or 2nd Engineer certification. Sea-going experience as a Chief Engineer or 2nd Engineer is required.
  • Experience: Minimum 5-10 years of experience in the maritime industry with roles in vessel operation, ship management, or marine engineering. Proven track record of managing technical operations for a fleet of vessels (e.g., bulk carriers, tankers, container ships, dredgers, offshore vessels). Experience in dry docking, ship repairs, and maintenance projects, including budget control and contractor management. Solid understanding of classification society rules, flag state regulations, and industry standards (ISM, ISPS, SOLAS, MARPOL). Experience with marine management software for tracking vessel performance, maintenance, and compliance. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple vessels and handle technical troubleshooting and operational challenges effectively. Candidates mandatorily must have sailing experience.
  • Skills & Competencies: In-depth knowledge of vessel machinery, marine systems, and international shipping regulations. Strong project management, organizational, and budgeting skills. Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal abilities. Ability to handle multiple vessels and technical challenges simultaneously. Proficiency in marine management software and other technical tools.
