Job Description

Janaagraha is a non-profit trust, established in 2001, working towards the mission of transforming quality of life in India s cities and towns. It works with citizens to catalyse active citizenship in city neighbourhoods and with governments to institute reforms to city governance (what we call City-Systems ). Janaagraha is part of the JANA Group one of India s best-known groups of not-for-profit institutions working towards the mission of fixing India s cities. Swati Ramanathan and Ramesh Ramanathan co-founded Jana Group in 2001 and it presently works across citizen participation and city governance reforms (through Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy ), city planning and design (through Jana Urban Space Foundation ), municipal consulting services (through Jana Urban Services for Transformation Pvt. Ltd .), banking and financial services for the urban poor (through Jana Small Finance Bank ) and affordable housing for the urban poor (through Janaadhar ).

We are looking for a highly passionate and competent professional to be part of Janaagraha s Development and Fundraising team. The role will involve developing compelling grant proposals, concept notes, fundraising applications, and other funding-related documents to support the financial goals. This role involves crafting persuasive narratives that highlight the organization s mission, programs, and impact to secure support from foundations, corporations, and individual donors. The role involves working closely with the Head -Development, CEO, and senior program leads to conceptualize multi-year fundraising partnerships.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES

A) Proposal/Concept Note Development:

  • Write and edit grant proposals, funding applications, and fundraising letters that align with the organization s mission and strategic goals.
  • Tailor proposals to meet the specific requirements of various funding sources, including foundations, corporations, and government agencies.
  • Develop proposal narratives, budgets, and supporting documents that clearly articulate proposed projects or programs needs, objectives, and expected outcomes.


B) Content Creation and Strategy:

  • Collaborate with program staff and leadership to gather information and data necessary for proposal development.
  • Craft compelling stories and case statements that illustrate the impact and value of the organization s work.
  • Ensure proposals reflect the organization s voice, branding, and strategic priorities.


C) Donor/Prospect Management:

  • Conduct research on potential funders, including their interests, funding history, and application guidelines.
  • Analyze funding opportunities to match organizational needs with funder priorities. Writing, editing, and overseeing the completion and submission of reports on all grants
  • Keeping a record of all grant reports due during the year
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to relationships with major donors and UHNIs maintaining high degree of confidentiality.


D) Quality Assurance:

  • Review and revise proposals to ensure clarity, coherence, and adherence to funder guidelines.
  • Proofread for accuracy, grammar, spelling, and formatting errors.
  • Ensure all proposals are submitted on time and meet the organization s quality standards.


E) Collaboration and Coordination:

  • Work with the development team to coordinate proposal submissions and gather necessary documentation.
  • Engage with Program Heads/managers and other stakeholders to ensure the accuracy and relevance of proposal content.
  • Participate in strategy meetings to discuss funding goals and proposal development plans.


F) Continuous Improvement:

  • Track and analyze the success rate of proposals and use feedback to improve future submissions.
  • Stay informed about trends and best practices in fundraising and grant writing.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Master s degree or equivalent in business administration, public administration, public policy, or other directly relevant fields
  • 6-8 years of work experience in the Not-for- Profit sector
  • Proven experience in writing successful grant proposals or fundraising documents, with a portfolio of successful proposals.
  • Experience working in the nonprofit sector or with fundraising teams is preferred. A deep knowledge of Systems Change/Public Policy/Climate change/ Gender/ Public health sectors would be considered a big positive
  • A high level of computer literacy is required, including familiarity with CRMs or relational databases, and proficiency with Microsoft Office Product
  • Possess a solid understanding of budgets as they relate to proposals and grants

KEY COMPETENCIES

  • Excellent Research skills and deep knowledge of the funding ecosystem
  • Excellent communication skills- both written and verbal. Demonstrate succinct and comprehensive writing skills
  • Ability to craft persuasive and strategic content that engages potential funders.
  • Ability to learn quickly on the job; willingness to adapt; excels in working across multi-disciplinary teams and exhibits superior project management skills
  • Able to deal with ambiguity
  • Highly Self-Motivated, can take complete ownership and work independently in an unstructured work environment with minimal supervision
