Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, set up in 1958 as the second IIT, is recognized worldwide as a leader in the field of engineering education and research. The Institute was granted the status of 'Institution of Eminence' by the Ministry of Education.
The Board of Governors of IIT Bombay in its 257th meeting held on 4th June 2021, approved setting up the 'Technocraft Centre for Applied Artificial Intelligence (TCAAI)' in the institute which will contribute significantly to the mission of the Institute and Nation. The Centre will engage in focused research areas of Operations Research using Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and Automation to applied works in industrial settings. Artificial Intelligence is expected to be a major driver of industrial, economic, and social progress in the years to come. Through the Centre, IIT Bombay wants to become a forerunner in applied AI and be an enabler of the national goal of leadership in applied AI through the expertise of faculty in AI, Data Sciences, Machine Learning and Optimization. In addition to the research and developmental activities, the Centre will also spread awareness of applications of AI and offer certificate programs and tailored courses to Industry professionals.
Job Purpose & Role of Program Director :
As the Program Director for TCA2I, you will be at the forefront of driving key programs, partnerships, and projects that aim to integrate emerging technologies into real-world applications. The Program Director will oversee multiple initiatives, working closely with faculty, industry leaders, researchers, and government bodies. You will ensure the alignment of the center's goals with IIT Bombay's broader vision of fostering world-class innovation. This role will be instrumental in achieving the Vision & Mission of the center:
- Vision: To create a platform to enable Academia and Industry sectors to leverage the benefits of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques.
- Mission: To foster collaboration between Industry and Academia in Applied Artificial Intelligence through various outreach programs and teaching activities. Undertaking joint projects with industry and defense sectors. Solving grand challenges of societal importance in collaboration with industry.
Key Responsibilities :
- Lead and oversee a portfolio of technology integration projects, from concept to execution, ensuring strategic alignment with TCA2I's mission and objectives.
- Develop and implement the centre's program strategies, including identifying emerging technology trends, setting project goals, and ensuring resources are allocated effectively.
- Build and nurture partnerships with academic researchers, industry leaders, government agencies, and other innovation hubs. Represent TCA2I in conferences, seminars, and meetings to elevate its profile and foster collaborations.
- Oversee the commercialization of research outputs and ensure smooth integration of industry needs with academic expertise. Support entrepreneurship and the startup ecosystem through mentorship and guidance.
- Monitor and manage budgets, timelines, and deliverables for ongoing programs. Ensure that projects are executed efficiently and in alignment with the institution's standards and timelines.
- Build, lead, and mentor a cross-functional team, ensuring collaboration across multiple disciplines (engineering, research, and commercialization).
- Regularly report on the progress of various programs to the leadership, ensuring that goals are met, and key performance indicators (KPIs) are achieved.
Desired Experience/competencies:
- A master's degree or higher in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field (Ph.D. preferred).
- 8+ years of experience in managing large-scale technology programs, research, or innovation projects, with a focus on industry integration.
- Proven experience in building and managing cross-functional teams.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to influence senior stakeholders.
- Expertise in emerging technologies such as AI, machine learning, IoT, robotics, and advanced computing.
- Experience in collaboration with academic, research, and industry partners.
Note: The compensation for the role will be competitive with similar roles in the 'not for profit' sector and will have a core and variable component tied to key result areas.
