Electrical Design Engineer

Job Description & Key Responsibilities

1. Electrical System Design & Engineering

• Lead the detailed engineering design of electrical systems for HV & EHV substations (ranging from 220 kV to 765 kV).
• Develop single line diagrams (SLD), protection schemes, relay coordination, and layouts for substations and switchyards.
• Work on power system studies, including load flow analysis, short circuit analysis, and relay settings using ETAP, PSCAD, and MATLAB.
• Ensure technical compliance with IEEE, IEC, CEA, and PGCIL standards.

2. Load Flow & Short Circuit Analysis

• Perform load flow, short circuit, and transient stability studies to optimize the substation design.
• Implement harmonic analysis, insulation coordination, and earthing system designs for substations.
• Optimize transformer and switchgear sizing based on system loads and anticipated expansions.

3. Protection & Control System Design

• Design protection schemes for power transformers, transmission lines, bus bars, and switchgears.
• Define settings for numerical relays (Siemens, ABB, Schneider, GE, etc.).
• Develop SCADA, automation, and communication protocols for efficient grid monitoring and control.

4. Equipment Specification & Procurement

• Prepare technical specifications and data sheets for major electrical equipment:
• Power Transformers (up to 765 kV)
• Circuit Breakers (AIS/GIS)
• Isolators, CTs, PTs, and Lightning Arresters
• Control & Relay Panels
• HT/LT switchgears, cables, and UPS systems
• Evaluate vendor offers, conduct technical bid evaluations, and support procurement processes.

5. Cable Scheduling & Routing

• Plan and manage cable sizing, scheduling, routing, and interconnections for substations and switchyards.
• Ensure compliance with fire safety, voltage drop, and current carrying capacity norms.

6. Coordination with Cross-Functional Teams

• Work closely with civil, mechanical, and automation teams to ensure the successful execution of projects.
• Collaborate with clients, consultants, and state/central transmission utilities (STUs & CTUs) to meet project requirements.
• Conduct technical discussions and reviews with stakeholders, including PGCIL, NTPC, SEBs, and DISCOMs.

Required Skills & Competencies

✔ Technical Expertise Strong knowledge of substation design, power system analysis, and relay coordination.
✔ Software Proficiency – Hands-on experience with ETAP, PSCAD, MATLAB, AutoCAD, and PLS-CADD.
✔ Standards & Regulations – Familiarity with IEEE, IEC, CEA, and BIS guidelines.
✔ Project Management – Ability to handle multiple projects, deadlines, and stakeholder communication.
✔ Analytical Thinking – Capability to solve complex electrical system challenges.
