Job Summary :

The API Automation Tester is responsible for designing, developing, and executing automated API tests using Java , Rest Assured , and JMeter . The role focuses on ensuring the functionality, performance, and reliability of APIs by writing and maintaining automated test scripts, performing performance testing, and collaborating with developers and other stakeholders to enhance the quality of the software. The ideal candidate will have strong programming skills, hands-on experience in API testing, and the ability to automate complex testing processes.

Key Responsibilities :

1. API Automation Testing :

• Design and implement automated API test scripts using Java and Rest Assured for RESTful and SOAP APIs.
• Write clean, efficient, and reusable automation scripts for functional and regression testing of APIs.
• Develop and execute test cases for different API request methods (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE) and validate the API responses (status codes, body, headers).
• Validate response data formats (JSON, XML) and ensure data consistency between different systems and services.
• Automate API testing workflows and integrate them with the CI/CD pipeline using tools such as Jenkins , GitLab CI , or CircleCI .

2. Performance Testing with JMeter :

• Perform performance testing on APIs using JMeter to measure response times, throughput, and load handling.
• Design and implement test scenarios for load, stress, and scalability testing to simulate real-world API usage.
• Analyze performance metrics from JMeter to identify bottlenecks and areas for optimization.
• Generate performance reports and provide insights into the overall performance and scalability of APIs.
• Work with the development team to identify performance improvement opportunities.

3. Test Development & Execution :

• Develop detailed and reusable test plans, test cases, and test scripts based on business requirements and API specifications.
• Execute automated tests for regression, smoke, functional, and integration testing of APIs.
• Perform manual testing when required, particularly for edge cases and new features that need immediate validation.
• Analyze test results, identify defects, and track issues using defect management tools like JIRA or Bugzilla .
• Ensure that tests are executed and reported in alignment with the release schedule and quality standards.

4. Collaboration & Reporting :

• Collaborate closely with developers, QA engineers, and product managers to understand API functionality and business requirements.
• Report testing results, issues, and progress regularly to the QA lead and stakeholders.
• Review and provide feedback on API documentation, specifications, and designs to ensure testing adequacy.
• Participate in sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives to ensure alignment with project goals.

5. Continuous Improvement & Optimization :

• Continuously improve test coverage, efficiency, and reliability of automation scripts.
• Refactor automation code to improve performance, scalability, and maintainability.
• Stay updated on industry trends and best practices in API testing, performance testing, and test automation frameworks.

6. Documentation :

• Maintain clear and concise documentation for test cases, automation scripts, testing methodologies, and test results.
• Document defects found during testing with steps to reproduce, including necessary logs, screenshots, and other artifacts.
• Create and maintain a library of reusable test scripts for API automation.

Required Skills and Qualifications :

• Education : Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
• Experience :
  • Proven experience in API Automation Testing with hands-on experience in Rest Assured and Java .
  • Strong experience with JMeter for performance and load testing of APIs.
  • Knowledge of testing RESTful APIs, SOAP APIs, and Web Services.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining automated test scripts for functional and regression testing.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD practices and integration of automated tests into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with version control tools such as Git , SVN , or Bitbucket .
  • Strong understanding of HTTP, REST, SOAP, JSON, XML, and other web services protocols and data formats.
  • Familiarity with defect management tools such as JIRA , Bugzilla , or Trello .

Technical Skills :

• Programming Languages : Proficiency in Java and experience with automation frameworks like TestNG , JUnit , or Cucumber .
• API Testing Tools : Strong experience with Rest Assured , Postman , or similar tools for API testing and automation.
• Performance Testing : Expertise in JMeter for performance testing and load testing APIs.
• CI/CD Tools : Experience with Jenkins , GitLab CI , or similar CI/CD tools to automate test execution and reporting.
• Version Control : Experience with version control systems such as Git , SVN , or Bitbucket .
• Database : Basic understanding of databases and SQL for validating API data and performing database queries.
• Security Testing : Familiarity with security testing of APIs and understanding common security vulnerabilities such as OWASP API Top 10 .

Preferred Skills :

• Cloud Platforms : Experience with cloud-based API testing (e.g., AWS , Azure , or Google Cloud ).
• Test Management : Familiarity with test management tools like TestRail or Quality Center .
• Agile Methodology : Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment and familiarity with Agile tools like JIRA and Confluence .
• Knowledge of Microservices : Experience with testing APIs in a microservices architecture.
