Oracle DBA with PostgreSQL skills

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Database Migration Specialist to lead and execute our on-premises Oracle to PostgreSQL database migration projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in both Oracle and PostgreSQL databases, with proven experience in managing complex migration projects in enterprise data centre environments.

Key Responsibilities

1. Lead the entire on-premises database migration lifecycle, from initial assessment to post-migration support
2. Conduct comprehensive assessments of existing Oracle database environments
3. Develop detailed migration strategies and project plans for on-premises transitions
4. Execute schema conversions, data migrations, and code refactoring (PL/SQL to PL/pgSQL)
5. Optimize PostgreSQL database performance post-migration
6. Collaborate with application teams to ensure smooth integration with migrated databases
7. Develop and implement testing strategies to ensure data integrity and system functionality
8. Provide technical guidance and support to team members throughout the migration process
9. Create and maintain migration documentation, including procedures and best practices
10. Troubleshoot and resolve complex migration issues
11. Conduct knowledge transfer sessions with clients and internal teams

Required Skills and Qualifications

1. Bachelors degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related field OR Masters in computer applications
2. Minimum of 5 years of experience with Oracle database administration in enterprise environments
3. Minimum of 3 years of experience with PostgreSQL database administration
4. Strong knowledge of Oracle and PostgreSQL architectures, features, and SQL dialects
5. Proficiency in PL/SQL and PL/pgSQL
6. Solid understanding of ETL processes and data validation techniques
7. Familiarity with common application frameworks and their database interactions
8. Hands-on experience with Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC)
9. Proficiency in database clustering techniques for both Oracle and PostgreSQL
10. Experience with database cloning processes and tools in on-premises environments
11. Strong background in designing and implementing on-premises disaster recovery (DR) solutions
12. Expertise in database backup and recovery strategies and tools for data center environments
13. Experience with performance tuning and optimization in both Oracle and PostgreSQL environments
14. Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL high availability solutions (e.g., Patroni, repmgr)
15. Experience with data center infrastructure and networking as they relate to database operations
16. Knowledge of database security best practices and compliance requirements in the financial sector
17. Familiarity with automation tools for database operations and migrations in on-premises settings
18. Familiarity with Agile project management methodologies

Preferred Qualifications

1. Proven experience in successfully completing on-premises Oracle to PostgreSQL migration projects
2. Experience with on-premises database migration tools (e.g., ora2pg)
3. Oracle and PostgreSQL certifications
4. Prior experience of Financial Services, Banking or Insurance environments or regulated environments
