Position Title: Makerspace Manager and Technician
Reports to: Innovation Lab Director
Job Overview:
The Makerspace Manager and Technician will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the university's makerspace, ensuring that students, faculty, and staff are exposed to the tools necessary for innovation and product development. This role demands a passionate maker with a deep understanding of fabrication tools, especially 3D printing, CNC routers, and laser cutters. Additionally, the individual will be tasked with maintaining the equipment, guiding users, and conducting workshops.
Key Responsibilities:
Makerspace Management:
Oversee daily operations of the makerspace to ensure all equipment is properly maintained, operational, and safe to use.
Develop protocols for safe and efficient use of makerspace tools and ensure users adhere to these guidelines.
Maintain an inventory of supplies and order replacements as necessary.
3D Printing Expertise (FDM & SLA):
Operate and maintain FDM & SLA 3D printers to ensure optimal performance.
Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues with 3D printers.
Provide guidance to students and faculty on 3D printing projects and processes.
CNC Router and Laser Cutter Operation:
Operate and maintain CNC routers and laser cutters.
Ensure safe operation and resolve technical problems with these machines.
Guide and supervise users on how to operate CNC routers and laser cutters safely and effectively.
Workshop Facilitation and Training:
Develop and conduct workshops to train students, faculty, and staff on the use of 3D printers, CNC routers, and laser cutters.
Create educational materials and tutorials to facilitate independent learning.
Equipment Maintenance:
Perform routine maintenance on all makerspace tools and equipment.
Ensure all equipment is in compliance with safety regulations and university policies.
Bonus Skills (Carpentry and Welding):
Knowledge of basic carpentry and welding is a plus.
Provide occasional support or guidance in these areas as needed.
Innovation and Collaboration:
Collaborate with faculty and students on creative projects, offering technical assistance and expertise.
Stay informed about trends and new developments in maker tools and techniques.
Foster an environment of creativity, innovation, and learning in the makerspace.
Qualifications and Skills:
A strong passion for the Maker movement and hands-on innovation.
Proficiency in operating and maintaining FDM & SLA 3D printers.
Experience with CNC routers and laser cutters.
Ability to conduct training workshops and tutorials on makerspace equipment.
Familiarity with basic carpentry and welding (preferred).
Strong problem-solving skills and technical troubleshooting ability.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with students and faculty.
