Job Description

Role & responsibilities

1. Supervision and Coordination of Rigging Operations

  • Manage Rigging Teams: Supervise riggers and rigging teams, ensuring they are properly trained, equipped, and capable of performing rigging tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Plan Rigging Operations: Develop and implement rigging plans, including selecting the correct equipment, calculating load limits, and ensuring compliance with safety standards for every lift or movement of heavy loads.
  • Coordinate with Other Departments: Collaborate with other supervisors, site managers, and engineering teams to ensure rigging operations align with overall project timelines, safety standards, and operational needs.

2. Rigging Equipment Management

  • Inspect Rigging Equipment: Ensure that all rigging equipment (e.g., slings, chains, ropes, hoists, cranes) is in good working condition and meets regulatory standards. Conduct regular inspections of the equipment to detect any wear or damage.
  • Ensure Proper Storage: Ensure that rigging equipment is properly stored and maintained to prevent damage or deterioration when not in use.
  • Select Appropriate Equipment: Choose the right rigging tools and equipment based on load weights, dimensions, and the environment, ensuring safety is maintained during lifting and moving operations.

3. Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure Safety Compliance: Enforce safety policies and ensure that all rigging operations comply with local, national, and international safety regulations, including OSHA, ANSI, or other relevant standards.
  • Identify and Mitigate Hazards: Conduct risk assessments to identify potential hazards (e.g., overhead lines, unstable ground conditions) and implement measures to mitigate those risks.
  • Monitor Safe Practices: Continuously monitor rigging operations to ensure workers adhere to safe working practices, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe lifting techniques.
  • Corrective Actions: In case of any safety violations or incidents, take immediate corrective actions and report issues to management for further investigation.

4. Conduct Rigging Inspections and Assessments

  • Daily Inspections: Perform daily inspections of rigging setups, ensuring that all lifting equipment and components are safe for use.
  • Load and Lift Assessment: Evaluate the weight, balance, and lifting requirements of loads to be moved, ensuring that the correct rigging configuration is used for each specific task.
  • Post-Lift Inspections: After each lift or move, ensure that the rigging equipment is inspected and that any damage is reported for repair or replacement.

5. Training and Development

  • Rigging Training: Provide training to riggers and other personnel involved in lifting operations, ensuring they understand rigging techniques, equipment use, and safety procedures.
  • Conduct Safety Briefings: Organize daily safety meetings or toolbox talks to discuss any potential hazards, safety concerns, or updates to rigging operations.
  • Promote Continuous Improvement: Encourage the professional development of rigging teams through ongoing training programs, certifications, and workshops to improve their skills and knowledge.

6. Lifting Plan Development

  • Develop Lifting Plans: Prepare detailed lifting plans for each heavy lift, which may include lift paths, crane requirements, rigging gear, and other safety protocols.
  • Load Calculation: Ensure that load weights and center of gravity calculations are correct to avoid accidents during lifting.
  • Complex Lifting Operations: For complex or challenging lifts, such as multi-point lifts or lifts in confined spaces, develop specific plans and ensure that additional safety measures are in place.

7. Collaboration with Site Management

  • Coordinate Lifts with Site Management: Work closely with project managers, engineers, and other supervisors to coordinate the scheduling of rigging operations and ensure that lifts are integrated into the overall construction schedule.
  • Problem-Solving: Collaborate with the project team to resolve any issues related to rigging or lifting operations, such as equipment failure, weight miscalculations, or unexpected site conditions.
  • Update Management: Report regularly to site management on the progress of rigging activities, equipment conditions, and any incidents or near-misses.

8. Incident Investigation and Reporting

  • Investigate Incidents: In case of an accident or near-miss during rigging operations, investigate the root cause of the incident and work with safety officers to implement corrective actions.
  • Document and Report: Complete detailed incident reports, documenting what happened, the causes, and the corrective measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

9. Risk Assessment and Mitigation

  • Assess Potential Risks: Conduct risk assessments before each rigging operation to identify potential hazards, such as overhead obstructions, weather conditions, or load instability.
  • Implement Mitigation Strategies: Put in place mitigation strategies to minimize risks, such as using additional rigging supports, coordinating with crane operators, or adjusting the timing of lifts to account for weather changes.

10. Coordination of Crane and Rigging Operations

  • Crane Coordination: Work with crane operators to ensure rigging teams and crane operators are aligned, with a clear understanding of the lifting procedures and requirements.
  • Signal Coordination: Ensure that communication is clear and precise between riggers, crane operators, and other team members during lifting operations. Ensure that proper hand signals, radio communication, or other signaling methods are used.
  • Monitor Load Movements: Oversee the movement of heavy loads, ensuring that they are lifted and moved safely, without risk to personnel or equipment.
