Job Description

Role & responsibilities

1. Rigging Planning and Design

  • Develop Rigging Plans: Prepare detailed rigging plans for lifting, moving, and positioning heavy loads, ensuring that the plans comply with safety standards, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
  • Load Calculations: Perform load calculations, including the weight, dimensions, and center of gravity of the items being moved, ensuring that the rigging equipment selected can handle the load.
  • Selection of Equipment: Choose the appropriate rigging equipment (e.g., slings, hoists, cranes, pulleys) based on the type of load, working environment, and safety requirements.
  • Consider Site Conditions: Analyze site conditions, such as space constraints, terrain, and overhead obstructions, and design rigging solutions that accommodate these factors.

2. Rigging Equipment Management

  • Inspect Rigging Equipment: Ensure that all rigging equipment (slings, shackles, hooks, chains, cranes, etc.) is in excellent working condition and meets safety standards. Perform regular inspections to detect signs of wear, damage, or degradation.
  • Maintenance and Storage: Oversee the maintenance and storage of rigging equipment to ensure its longevity and safe use. Implement proper procedures for storing, handling, and maintaining equipment.
  • Equipment Selection: Select the appropriate type and size of rigging gear based on the task, load, and environmental conditions to ensure safety during lifting and moving operations.

3. Supervision of Rigging Operations

  • Oversee Rigging Teams: Supervise rigging crews and ensure they adhere to safety protocols and rigging procedures. Provide guidance and leadership during rigging operations, ensuring that all tasks are carried out efficiently and safely.
  • Safety Compliance: Enforce safety regulations and procedures to ensure that rigging operations are conducted in compliance with local, national, and international standards (e.g., OSHA, ANSI, or other industry-specific regulations).
  • Monitor Lifting Operations: Oversee the entire lifting operation, ensuring that the rigging is set up correctly, the load is balanced, and that all lifting actions are executed safely and within the recommended load limits.

4. Risk Assessment and Safety Measures

  • Identify Risks: Conduct thorough risk assessments before rigging operations, identifying potential hazards such as unstable surfaces, overhead hazards, or environmental risks (e.g., weather conditions).
  • Implement Mitigation Plans: Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies, such as providing additional rigging supports, using specialized equipment, or scheduling lifts during favorable weather conditions.
  • Monitor Safety: Continuously monitor rigging operations to ensure that safety practices are being followed, workers are using appropriate PPE, and potential hazards are addressed promptly.

5. Training and Development

  • Train Rigging Teams: Provide training and mentorship to rigging teams, ensuring they understand safe rigging practices, equipment handling, and how to properly execute lifting operations.
  • Conduct Safety Briefings: Lead safety meetings or toolbox talks to discuss hazards, risks, and safe practices before each rigging operation.
  • Stay Updated on Standards: Continuously update knowledge of the latest rigging techniques, safety standards, and equipment technologies to ensure that operations comply with industry best practices.

6. Technical Support and Troubleshooting

  • Provide Technical Expertise: Offer technical support and guidance to rigging teams and other departments involved in lifting and moving heavy loads, offering solutions to complex rigging challenges.
  • Troubleshoot Issues: Quickly identify and address any issues that arise during rigging operations, such as equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, or logistical challenges. Develop solutions to minimize downtime and ensure safety.
  • Provide Recommendations: Recommend improvements to rigging practices or equipment, based on experience or new technological advancements, to enhance efficiency and safety.

7. Documentation and Reporting

  • Document Rigging Plans: Ensure all rigging plans, load calculations, and risk assessments are thoroughly documented for future reference, audits, and compliance purposes.
  • Inspection and Maintenance Records: Maintain detailed records of all inspections, maintenance, and repairs conducted on rigging equipment.
  • Incident Reporting: If any incidents, near misses, or safety violations occur during rigging operations, the rigging expert is responsible for investigating and reporting the incident, documenting corrective actions, and recommending improvements.

8. Coordination with Other Departments

  • Liaise with Engineering Teams: Collaborate with engineers to design safe and efficient rigging solutions, particularly for complex or unusual loads, or to integrate rigging operations into the overall project schedule.
  • Coordinate with Site Managers: Work closely with site managers, project managers, and other departments to ensure that rigging operations are properly scheduled, coordinated, and aligned with project timelines.
  • Communicate with Crane Operators: Work closely with crane operators and other equipment operators to ensure proper coordination and communication during lifting operations.

9. Compliance with Environmental and Regulatory Standards

  • Adhere to Industry Standards: Ensure that rigging operations comply with industry regulations and environmental standards, such as OSHA, ANSI, ASME, or local standards. Keep up to date with any changes in these standards.
  • Permit Management: Ensure that all necessary permits and approvals are obtained before undertaking complex rigging operations, especially when working in regulated environments such as offshore or hazardous areas.

10. Incident Investigation and Preventive Action

  • Investigate Rigging Incidents: If an incident occurs during rigging operations, conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause, and provide a detailed report to management.
  • Implement Preventive Actions: Based on incident investigations, develop and implement corrective actions and preventive measures to improve rigging safety and avoid similar incidents in the future.
