Job Description

Role & responsibilities

1. Design and Planning of Scaffolding Systems

  • Scaffolding Design: Work with engineers and project managers to design scaffolding structures tailored to the specific needs of the construction project. This includes selecting the right type of scaffolding (e.g., tubular scaffolding, frame scaffolding, suspended scaffolding) based on the height, load requirements, and nature of the project.
  • Site Assessment: Conduct site assessments to understand the terrain, structure, and environment where scaffolding will be erected. Identify potential hazards and design scaffolding systems that mitigate these risks.
  • Load Calculations: Perform structural load calculations to ensure that the scaffolding will safely support the weight of workers, materials, and tools. This is crucial for ensuring the safety of the structure.

2. Scaffolding Installation Supervision

  • Supervise Scaffolding Erection: Oversee the proper installation and assembly of scaffolding on-site, ensuring it is erected correctly, securely, and in accordance with the approved design.
  • Work with Scaffolders: Provide guidance to scaffolders and installation crews to ensure that scaffolding systems are constructed as per the specifications and safety standards.
  • Ensure Compliance: Ensure that all scaffolding activities follow local, national, and international safety standards, such as OSHA or HSE regulations.

3. Scaffolding Inspections and Maintenance

  • Inspect Scaffolding: Conduct regular inspections of scaffolding structures to identify any damage, instability, or potential failure points. Inspections should be done at the start and end of every work shift, as well as after adverse weather conditions or accidents.
  • Ensure Safety: Ensure that all scaffolding components, such as platforms, guardrails, and supports, are in good condition and functioning properly.
  • Perform Load Testing: Conduct load tests to verify that scaffolding can support the required loads safely. This may be necessary for particularly heavy-duty scaffolding used in large-scale construction projects.
  • Monitor Usage: Ensure scaffolding is being used correctly by workers, without overloading or misuse, and that safety protocols are followed.

4. Safety Compliance and Risk Management

  • Safety Audits: Perform safety audits on scaffolding systems regularly to ensure they comply with relevant health and safety laws, such as OSHA or local standards, and that workers are trained on proper use and safety procedures.
  • Risk Assessment: Identify potential hazards associated with scaffolding (e.g., falling objects, collapse, structural weaknesses) and implement risk control measures such as guardrails, to boards, and netting to prevent accidents.
  • Training and Guidance: Provide training to workers on scaffolding safety practices, including how to safely work on and around scaffolding, how to recognize hazards, and how to use fall protection systems. Ensure workers are properly trained before using scaffolding.

5. Scaffolding Deconstruction and Removal

  • Supervise Dismantling: Oversee the safe dismantling or deconstruction of scaffolding when it is no longer needed, ensuring it is done without risk to workers or the integrity of the building structure.
  • Reusability of Components: Ensure that scaffolding materials and components are carefully stored and maintained for reuse in future projects, preserving their safety and durability.

6. Project Coordination and Communication

  • Work with Project Managers: Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and other specialists to coordinate scaffolding requirements and timelines, ensuring the scaffolding system aligns with project needs and schedules.
  • Liaise with Safety Officers: Communicate regularly with safety officers to ensure that scaffolding-related safety concerns are addressed and that scaffolding is integrated into the overall site safety plan.
  • Document and Report: Keep detailed records of scaffolding inspections, maintenance schedules, and repairs, and provide reports to management or regulatory bodies when necessary.

7. Emergency Response and Troubleshooting

  • Respond to Emergencies: In the event of a scaffolding-related emergency (e.g., collapse, structural failure, or accident), lead the response efforts, including evacuating workers, securing the area, and assisting in investigations.
  • Troubleshoot Issues: Resolve any scaffolding-related issues on-site promptly, such as structural concerns, stability problems, or incorrect assembly, to minimize downtime and ensure the safety of workers.

8. Continuous Improvement and Innovation

  • Research and Development: Stay updated on new technologies, materials, and practices in scaffolding systems to improve the safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of scaffolding used on future projects.
  • Process Improvement: Identify areas for improvement in scaffolding practices and procedures on the construction site. Implement changes to enhance safety, quality, and productivity.

Certifications

  • Certified Scaffold Builder: Certification from recognized organizations (e.g., National Association of Scaffold Erectors or equivalent) that proves proficiency in scaffolding installation and safety standards.
  • OSHA Certification: OSHA 30-hour or 10-hour construction safety certification, particularly focusing on scaffolding and fall protection.
  • Scaffold Inspector Certification: Certification in scaffolding inspection from a recognized organization (e.g., CISRS, ANSI).
  • First Aid & CPR: Basic first aid and CPR certification to handle emergencies related to scaffolding accidents.
