Role & responsibilities

1. Blood Collection

• Venipuncture: Drawing blood from veins, typically from the arm.
• Capillary Puncture: Performing fingerstick or heelstick to collect blood for tests when venipuncture is not necessary.
• Proper Technique: Ensuring the blood collection process is done safely and hygienically, minimizing discomfort and injury to the patient.

2. Patient Interaction

• Prepare Patients: Explain the procedure to patients, address concerns, and ensure they are comfortable and informed.
• Identify Patients: Verify patient identification to prevent errors in blood sample collection.
• Collect Medical History: Ask patients about any medical conditions or medications that might affect the blood draw.

3. Sample Handling and Labeling

• Label Samples: Properly label blood samples with the correct patient information, date, and time of collection to ensure accuracy.
• Transport Samples: Ensure proper handling and transport of blood samples to the laboratory for testing.
• Specimen Integrity: Ensure samples are not contaminated or compromised during collection and transport.

4. Safety and Infection Control

• Follow Protocols: Adhere to all safety, infection control, and hygiene protocols, including the use of gloves, sterilized equipment, and safe disposal of needles and other instruments.
• Prevent Cross-Contamination: Ensure that there is no contamination of blood samples by using new and sterile equipment for each patient.

5. Maintenance of Equipment

• Prepare Equipment: Ensure that all necessary equipment, such as needles, blood collection tubes, and gloves, are ready and in good condition.
• Sterilize Tools: Clean and sterilize equipment after each use according to hospital or clinic procedures.

6. Patient Comfort

• Minimize Discomfort: Aim to reduce pain and anxiety during the blood draw by using the least invasive technique possible and providing clear communication.
• Aftercare: Provide guidance to patients after blood collection, such as advice on pressure application to prevent bruising or bleeding.

7. Documentation and Record Keeping

• Record Information: Document patient details, blood draw procedures, and any adverse reactions or complications.
• Maintain Records: Keep accurate and up-to-date patient and specimen records in the hospital or laboratory's database.

8. Communication

• Coordinate with Healthcare Providers: Communicate with doctors, nurses, and lab technicians to ensure that blood samples are collected in a timely manner for testing.
• Report Issues: Notify supervisors or physicians if there are difficulties with blood draws, such as patient reactions or technical issues.

9. Compliance with Regulations

• Follow Legal and Ethical Guidelines: Adhere to all relevant medical laws, regulations, and ethical standards related to blood collection, privacy, and patient care.
• Blood Bank Regulations: Ensure that blood collection procedures for blood donations follow specific standards if working in a blood bank.

10. Emergency Procedures

• Handle Complications: Respond to any complications that may arise during or after blood collection, such as fainting, excessive bleeding, or bruising, by following emergency protocols.
