Job Description


Role & responsibilities

1. Role as Key Management Person

  • Provide advice to ED/ CEO as required on medical issues in accordance with local and national policy.
  • Responsible for quality services, patient safety and implementation of the hospitals clinical governance strategy.
  • Contribute to the planning and design of the new facilities and services in the hospital.
  • Manage all resources within control in the most appropriate way to ensure effective services which represents value for money.
  • Work with other Department heads to ensure the hospital meets all its corporate responsibilities including financial responsibilities, health and safety etc.

2. Service planning

  • Work in collaboration with other Department Heads of Hospital and take lead role in the development and implementation of a medical workforce strategy to support the delivery of both the medical workforce agenda and the hospitals clinical strategy.
  • Develop the role of clinical leaders within the hospital, by building leadership capacity and offering individual mentorship where appropriate.
  • Ensure that the medical workforce strategy supports hospital compliance with statutory regulations and professional recommendations.
  • Take the lead clinical role in developing and implementing the hospitals clinical strategy ensuring the provision of an appropriate and effective range of services and that planned changes or developments are clinically sound.

3. Clinical governance and accountability for patient care

  • In partnership with the Head- Nursing, ensure the development and delivery of an effective, outcome focused nursing strategy.
  • Act as co-lead for clinical governance with particular responsibility for clinical effectiveness.
  • Ensure that Protocols/Procedures are in place and made known to all Medical staff.
  • Lead on clinical governance matters involving doctors, with particular reference to infection control.
  • Ensure that a hospital clinical risk management strategy is implemented and regularly reviewed.

4. Medical management

  • Provide effective professional leadership to and management of, all medical staff working in the Hospital.
  • Lead and develop clinical engagement in the management of running of the hospital.

5. Professional advice and leadership

  • As the lead doctor, provide appropriate professional and clinical leadership in the delivery of healthcare services and be the person responsible for supervising the conduct and performance of all doctors and consultants and medical officers working in the Hospital.
  • Act as Guardian for the hospital and ensure that the hospital complies with the requirement for information governance.
  • Represent the hospital on Medical Committees and other such bodies.
  • Work with the Heads of Departments to ensure that the views of senior clinicians are made available to the senior management and ED.
  • Encourage the achievement of continuous improvement and excellence in the provision of clinical services throughout the Hospital.
  • Advise the management on the impact of professional issues, statutory requirements, changes in clinical practice and the provision of clinical services.
  • Network and consult with medical colleagues and local General Practitioners in supporting the corporate agenda and clinical and marketing strategy of the hospital.

6. Training and Development

  • Support all career grade medical staff in their continuing education and professional development.
  • Take a lead role in the development of a hospital plan to meet the training and development needs of all staff.
  • Ensure the effectiveness of the appraisal process.
  • Ensure the hospital meets its obligations, and guidance, regulations and recommendations, in particular for the training of its junior doctors.

7. Communication

  • Ensure effective multi-channel communication across the Hospital.
  • Contribute to and support effective external communication with other providers.
  • Take the lead on ensuring appropriate liaison with other providers on clinical practice matters within the Hospital.
  • Act as an ambassador for the hospital and facilitate good relationships with the local community.
  • Where appropriate, act as the spokesperson on behalf of the Hospital with the media on all medical issues.

8. Quality Management

  • To ensure that the processes needed for Quality Management System are established, implemented and maintained.
  • Coordinate through organizational leaders, educational activities regarding standards, systems and other quality improvement methodologies.
  • To guide department implement Quality Management System.
  • To assess state of readiness of hospital for Quality certification / Accreditation surveys.

Preferred candidate profile :


Total minimum 15 years of experience out of which atleast 10 yrs of experience working in Leadership roles in 100 bed hospital. Experience in Quality Accredited Healthcare Facility is desirable.


Key skills :

Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate teams to achieve organizational goals.

Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse stakeholders.

In-depth knowledge of healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, and industry best practices.

Proficiency in financial management, budgeting, and strategic planning. Demonstrated ability to think critically, solve complex problems, and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.

Commitment to maintaining high standards of ethics, integrity, and professionalism in all aspects of work.
