To establish, implement, and oversee Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) systems for a greenfield pharmaceutical project, ensuring compliance with legal, regulatory, and organizational standards, while fostering a safe and sustainable working environment.

Key Responsibilities:

1. EHS Strategy and Planning:

• Develop and implement EHS policies, systems, and procedures for the greenfield project from inception to completion.
• Conduct EHS risk assessments during project planning and execution phases.
• Ensure integration of EHS standards into the design, construction, and commissioning stages of the facility.

2. Regulatory Compliance:

• Ensure compliance with local, national, and international EHS regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA, Factory Act, Pollution Control Board guidelines).
• Liaise with government agencies and regulatory bodies for obtaining necessary permits, clearances, and approvals.
• Prepare and submit reports/documentation as required by regulatory authorities.

3. Construction Phase EHS Oversight:

• Monitor EHS practices during construction, ensuring contractor and workforce compliance with safety protocols.
• Conduct site inspections, hazard identification, and risk mitigation during construction activities.
• Implement and enforce safety measures for heavy equipment usage, material handling, and hazardous work.
• Investigate and report any incidents, near-misses, or non-compliance, and implement corrective actions.

4. Environmental Management:

• Develop and implement strategies for pollution prevention, waste management, and resource conservation.
• Oversee the installation and validation of effluent treatment plants (ETPs), sewage treatment plants (STPs), and air emission control systems.
• Ensure compliance with environmental monitoring and reporting requirements during construction and commissioning phases.

5. Health and Safety Management:

• Establish and implement workplace health and safety programs, including emergency response plans, fire safety systems, and first aid facilities.
• Conduct regular safety drills, training programs, and workshops for employees and contractors.
• Monitor and ensure compliance with industrial hygiene practices during construction and commissioning.

6. Training and Awareness:

• Develop and deliver EHS training programs for employees, contractors, and stakeholders.
• Foster a culture of safety, sustainability, and accountability across all project phases.

7. Reporting and Documentation:

• Maintain accurate records of EHS incidents, audits, inspections, and training activities.
• Prepare and present EHS performance reports to senior management and project stakeholders.

8. Sustainability and Energy Management:

• Promote green building practices and energy-efficient technologies for the facility.
• Identify opportunities for renewable energy integration and resource optimization.

Key Skills and Competencies:

• In-depth knowledge of EHS regulations and standards in the pharmaceutical industry.
• Proven experience in managing EHS for greenfield projects, including construction and commissioning phases.
• Strong leadership and communication skills for managing cross-functional teams and contractors.
• Proficiency in risk assessment tools, EHS software, and reporting systems.
• Ability to handle regulatory inspections and audits effectively.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Bachelors/Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Occupational Health, or related field.
• Certification in EHS management systems (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH, ISO 14001, ISO 45001) preferred.
• 12–15 years of experience in EHS, with at least 5 years in a leadership role for a greenfield project in the pharmaceutical or similar industry.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

• Zero lost-time incidents (LTIs) during the project lifecycle.
• Timely acquisition of all required EHS permits and approvals.
• Compliance rate with EHS inspections and audits.
• Timely implementation of environmental control systems (ETP, STP, etc.).
• Effective training coverage for workforce and contractors.
• Reduction in environmental footprint during project construction and commissioning.
