Job Description

Role & responsibilities


1. Operating and Monitoring Refining Equipment

  • Operate and monitor Alfa Laval equipment, including centrifuges, pumps, heat exchangers, filters, and other refinery machinery.
  • Adjust operational parameters such as temperature, pressure, flow rates, and chemical treatments to optimize the refining process and maintain consistent product quality.
  • Ensure that all equipment is functioning properly, making adjustments as necessary to ensure smooth operations.

2. Process Control and Optimization

  • Control and monitor the tallow refining processes (degumming, neutralizing, bleaching, deodorizing) to ensure compliance with production schedules and product specifications.
  • Track and analyze process data, identifying areas for improvement in efficiency and performance.
  • Implement process changes and adjustments as needed to ensure consistent product quality.

3. Quality Control and Testing

  • Collect and test samples from the refining process to monitor product quality (e.g., odor, color, impurities) and make adjustments as necessary to meet quality standards.
  • Work closely with the laboratory team to analyze sample data and ensure that final products meet required specifications.
  • Maintain a high standard of quality control throughout the refining process to ensure the consistency of the end product.

4. Troubleshooting and Maintenance Support

  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve any issues or irregularities in the operation of refinery equipment, working closely with maintenance teams for repairs and adjustments.
  • Report equipment malfunctions or safety concerns immediately to the appropriate personnel and follow up on repairs to minimize production downtime.

5. Adherence to Safety and Environmental Standards

  • Follow all safety procedures and protocols to ensure a safe working environment, especially when dealing with hazardous materials, high temperatures, and industrial chemicals.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations regarding waste disposal, emissions, and product handling.
  • Wear and maintain proper personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times when in the production area.

6. Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of daily operations, including equipment performance, process parameters, production output, and quality control results.
  • Complete daily logs and reports detailing any irregularities or issues encountered during operations and submit to the supervisor.
  • Keep records of chemical usage, equipment maintenance schedules, and safety inspections.

7. Inventory Management

  • Monitor raw materials (tallow, chemicals, etc.) and finished product inventories to ensure production needs are met without interruption.
  • Coordinate with warehouse and supply chain teams to ensure the timely delivery of required materials and proper storage of refined products.

8. Team Collaboration and Communication

  • Collaborate with other refinery operators, maintenance personnel, and management to ensure smooth and efficient refinery operations.
  • Communicate effectively with team members to address any concerns or challenges during operations.
  • Participate in team meetings and provide input on process improvements, safety issues, and maintenance needs.

9. Continuous Improvement

  • Participate in ongoing training sessions to enhance your skills and knowledge of the refining processes and safety standards.
  • Identify opportunities for process optimization and cost reduction while maintaining product quality and safety standards.
  • Stay informed about new technologies and practices in the industry to continuously improve operational efficiency.



Preferred candidate profile


Educational Qualifications:

  • Required: Any graduate diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred: Technical certification or degree in Process Technology

Experience:

  • Required:
    • Previous experience in an industrial or refinery environment, preferably in a processing or production role.
    • Familiarity with basic refinery operations, including chemical processes, filtration, and heating processes.
  • Preferred:
    • Hands-on experience operating Alfa Laval equipment, such as centrifuges, heat exchangers, filtration systems, and other refining technologies.
    • Experience in the tallow, edible oil, or chemical refining industries is highly advantageous.
    • At least 23 years of experience in a similar refinery or manufacturing role.

Technical Skills:

  • Required:
    • Understanding of basic refinery processes such as degumming, neutralizing, bleaching, deodorizing, and filtration.
    • Knowledge of how to monitor and adjust refinery parameters, such as temperature, pressure, flow rates, and chemical treatments.
    • Familiarity with industrial equipment and machinery, including pumps, valves, and centrifuges.
  • Preferred:
    • Experience with control systems such as Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), or other automation platforms.
    • Familiarity with Alfa Laval systems and technology, especially in the areas of heat exchangers, centrifugation, and filtration.

Safety & Compliance Knowledge:

  • Required:
    • Strong commitment to adhering to safety protocols and industry regulations (e.g., OSHA, local environmental laws).
    • Understanding of safety standards and handling of hazardous materials, including the proper use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
  • Preferred:
    • Certification in hazardous materials handling, safety, or environmental compliance (e.g., HAZWOPER, First Aid/CPR).

Soft Skills:

  • Problem-Solving & Troubleshooting: Ability to identify issues quickly and take effective action to resolve them, often under pressure.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong ability to monitor processes and equipment closely, identifying and addressing deviations from desired conditions.
  • Teamwork & Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other departments.
  • Time Management: Ability to manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.

Physical & Mental Attributes:

  • Required:
    • Ability to work in an industrial environment with exposure to noise, heat, chemicals, and varying weather conditions.
    • Physically fit to handle the demands of the job, including standing for extended periods, lifting heavy items, and operating machinery.
  • Preferred:
    • Mental resilience and the ability to stay calm and focused during high-pressure or emergency situations.
    • Ability to work in rotating shifts (if applicable), including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
