there are 3 types of waits in selenium:

implicit waits: fixed wait of given time interval where execution wait for at least given no. of seconds until the page or web elements loads.
Explicit waits: these are flexible waits which wait until a certain condition defined is not met. It throws exceptions when conditions doesn't meet. WebDriverWait class is available to apply for the wait conditions like visibility/invisiblity of elements, element to be clickable, framtobe available and switch to it.
fluent waits: these are also flexible waits where pooling happens on loop for few seconds to validate a condition until full time defined is completed.
