Any training plan needs to factor in the actual training needs. Training cannot be done as a routine activity. In my scheme of things, I will always look at a very comprehensive range of training needs focussed on meeting today's competencies, but also those needed in the near future and over a five year span. There will also be a specific reference to succession planning, as those who are groomed for higher responsibilities need to have learning curves that go far beyond their present responsibilities and closely mirror those of highly successful managers in the same organization. To this end, constant need for developing and training mentors will also become imperative.
