Interview Preparation Tips

Topics to prepare for Sutherland Global Services Implementation Engineer interview:
  • SQL Server
  • IIS Server
  • Windows Server Administration
Interview preparation tips for other job seekers - Advice: Join only if you do not have any other option! Read my full review!

Initially, the interview was set up after a surprise call from the company. It was a screening 'surprise' call. The interview was scheduled after this.

Here comes the interviewers, Basic introduction was done. I have 2.5 years of experience and the job description mentioned 0-2 years experience required. So I was mentally prepared for beginner level questions. Initially the beginner level questions were asked and I answered them. Then comes intermediate to advanced level questions that includes asking the version of applications being used. I was able to answer few of them and frankly told that I don't know a few of them.

After the technical questionnaire, the panel started rudely saying that my introduction was good but I was weak in my technical answers (which I was not). My self confidence hit the floor when I heard this (This was a first red flag), but then I thought that I might have loosed this job already so why back out now! I told the interviewers that I am proficient with this and this technology and I am not sure what more answers are you expecting, I think I did the best.

The HR on the pannel responded saying He likes my attitude and asked my expectations. I gave him a number and the HR negotiated on that and we settled with 1 lakh rs less than what I asked for.

All done, I informed my current employer that I have an offer. But to my surprise, I got call from Sutherland telling me that hiring manager is not satisfied because they are paying more for the technical skills I have! (This was second red flag). They wanted to negotiate more as I did not pressurized them enough at the initial discussion.
Again, 50k was deducted from what we discussed and I was disappointed!

After the above discussion, I was afraid I would loose my current job and won't get a job in Sutherland and this led to not accept the offer.

After few days, 'Rude' HR called me asking if I have accepted the offer and ready to join. I tried to explain her the situation but the lady's words "I don't want to hear the story and all, tell me if you are joining or not" (Third and final red flag).

I would stick to my current job with low pay as it provides security and good work culture. Beware!

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: On 1st September 2016, Cognizant held this round at our college. We were initially told that it would be an adaptive paper but it was not so. We could not navigate between questions (both intra and inter section). There was a minimum number of questions which had to be attempted from each section else we would disqualify. The questions were easy and I found many questions common from AMCAT papers.
Tips: Practice as much as you can. Try to learn shortcut tricks to solve the questions quickly and easily. Try to solve questions within certain time limit. Give online tests so that you are familiar with giving tests on machine. Do not waste time in a particular question. If you can't solve it then leave it( if there is negative marking) or answer randomly( if there is no negative marking).
Duration: 55 mins minutes
Total Questions: 55

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: The interviewer asked me to introduce myself. I was nervous and so i fumbled in 2 or 3 sentences but then i took the pace. he chit chatted with me to release my pressure . he went through my resume and my marksheets. he asked a few HR questions and then started the technical interview. He asked me questions regarding microprocessors and electronics but I had prepared software subjects I being a CS student could not remember most of it. But I sill answered them with best of my knowledge. i told him that I would rather be comfortable with CS core subjects. then he shifted his focus to DBMS and Software Engineering I did not lose my calm although I was very nervous. I thought I would be rejected but finally I got selected.
Tips: Don't be nervous as most of the interviewers are really friendly and they give ample chances to prove yourself. Try to practice the your introduction. They may ask your questions that are not from your domain but try to answer them with your presence of mind and previous knowledge. you may be nervous but don't show that on your face. Try to have basic concepts of your core subjects.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: It is the best round. You can voice your own views. The interviewers are mostly friendly and you seem to have a discussion with your friends.
If you manage to appear for this round most probably you will be selected.
Tips: Just be simple and be frank. Answer to the point and do not sound arrogant.

Skill Tips: Try to clear the aptitude and half of your job is done. For technical interview try to learn the basics of c,OOPS,DBMS. Try to know about the company .
Be calm .
All the best..!!
Skills: software engineering, Basic Electronics, Basic Knowledge Of DBMS

Experience: This round is the most common round in a general campus recruitment procedure. I have been practising for this round for quite some time, like for 4-5 months. And finally the day came. It was on 1st of September 2016. So it is still fresh in my mind. The test started at somewhere around 2 p.m (as because the number of computers were less than the number of applicants, so we were divided into batches). I was confident enough with the paper as i practised many of them at the time of preparation. We have been told that the paper will be adaptive type. But those who gave the test denied this fact. There were three rounds, aptitude, followed by verbal and logical reasoning. I was tensed at the time of the test as i was fresher and many had expectations from me. Verbal round was easy ( many questions were common with the previous years questions), logical round was easy too, but the aptitude round was a bit tricky. I did some grave mistakes in the aptitude round. So after the test was completed, i was surely not confident with the aptitude portion,(If you are unable to clear one of them, no matter how well you score in the others, you will be rejected). In the evening the results came and luckily i was selected for the second round i.e the technical round.
Tips: KEEP PRACTISING THE QUESTIONS..!! Solve questions online as the final test will be machine based and not written. try to solve the question quickly. If possible, buy an aptitude book and solve questions from there. In the final test, If you can't solve a question, SIMPLY LEAVE it and go for the next question. NEVER EVER TRY TO SEE WHAT OTHERS ARE DOING. Its a grave mistake and can cost you your career. Do your best. Believe in yourself and let your hard work speak..!!
Good luck.!!

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: The technical round started at around 10-11 a.m. The interviewer was young and neutral at expression. It wasn't easy to judge how the interviewer was. He started with the default question which was "TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF". I practised that question for about 1000 times and as expected i nailed it. Then he went through my resume. I had included C,JAVA and DBMS as my skill sets. So the questions were from that portions only. i some how managed to answer them all. But i answered wrong in many of them. Seeing the body language of the recruiter. i was sure that i failed to impress him and i'll get rejected. But at last he asked 2 trick questions and i answered it LIKE A BOSS.!! That was the turning point of my interview and he was impressed with that. My interview was over there and shortly after, i was told that i was selected for the HR round. I was too excited as i was selected for the HR round.
Tips: PRESENCE OF MIND IS THE KEY..!!! No matter how many wrong answers you give. One impressive right answer can get you your job. Recruiter is no machine or God. He is also a man. Be confident, speak well and to the point. If you don't know the answer, at least try once. Don't be overconfident and over smart. Be yourself. Practise Tell me about yourself thoroughly.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: This round is simple conversation round. The HR will ask you question to see what you are. Your behaviour, your body language, your temper, etc, There is no rocket science to crack this round. If you manage to qualify for this round, Consider 90% job done. Be frank, jolly, answer questions to the point. Try to mix up with him. and always KEEP A SMILE ON YOUR FACE. You will definitely qualify..!!
Tips: BE CONFIDENT & BE YOURSELF..!!

General Tips: Start practising for the aptitude round from 4-5 months before the actual test. Practise from various enlisted websites. It helps a lot..!! Believe me. Strengthen your basic concepts. Give only those subjects in your resume with whom you are confident with. Do add your extra curricular activities. It helps.
Skills: Proficiency In English, Basic Concepts Of Launguages, Basic Coding, Presence Of Mind, Confidence
College Name: st.thomas college of engineering and technology
Motivation: Infosys is a big company with a very good reputation in the market. loads and loads of people are orking in the company which itself says how the company is.
Funny Moments: There were many. I am a bit humorous. So it was easy for me to make the environment light. Though i didn't cracked any joke, but my body language made it so..!!! I was asked that how will i manage with the transport system of the new place where i will go to work. As i am from Kolkata (one of the most busiest public transport system is here), i said that "Sir i have managed with the public transport here in Kolkata, transport in other city is a piece of cake for me..!!", and we both laughed. :-P
