2 Interview Rounds

1

Case Study Round

A case was given and we were asked to make a 3 slider presentation within 40 minutes which we had to present post the stipulated time.

Case brief: Mr Bhardwaj started a consumer durable retail chain 12 years ago and currently had a total of 13 stores in Baroda, Ahmedabad and Pune. The economy was doing well and also in the recent times several Government regulations were enforced/about to be enforced (like company act 2013, GST etc.) which favoured businesses. In the past year, the company witnessed a decline in their bottom-line though the revenue was on the rise (implicitly given).

Still, looking at the external conditions, Mr Bhardwaj wanted to expand the business beyond the territory of its current presence. Until now, the strategic decisions of the company was taken by family and only operational level decisions by store-level manager. They wanted to keep their values and culture of the company intact. They laid a lot of emphasis on the service levels and also spent a lot in training their employees in this regard. The cost was also rising due to piling up of inventory, damage of inventory, increase in rent etc. Also, they were facing stiff competition from online players’ predatory pricing policy and also the large players who leveraged their market share to bargain with suppliers. We are asked about the forward strategy for the retail client.
Provided solution for:
• Increasing Profit margin
• Increasing market share

Was cross questioned several times on the solutions and was also asked to give example to a real-life situation where the solution could be applied. E.g. – I said they can look for joint venture. Then I was asked why someone who is already established would want to form a joint venture with a small company like our client.

Then I was extensively asked about my work experience. The technical aspects of it as well. They wanted to see the depth of my understanding as I was from communication domain and they also hired for the same field.

Then, I was asked a few current affairs questions and a few facts of communication sector.

2

Case Study Round

I was asked a guestimate (How many 2-wheelers are there in India?).

P.S. – The basic structure of questions for all those interviewed was same i.e. presentation related question and how logically we came to derive our solution (case question), work-ex, CV and guestimate.

1 Interview Round

1

Case Study Round

The interview began with a general introduction and then the interviewer asked me about my interests.

He asked what attracted me towards consulting as a domain for which I gave a prompt response. (Be prepared for such questions). He then gave me a
case based on one of my interests – Movies.

Case: Should Netflix launch Sacred Games season 3 in India? Why/Why not?
I began with reciting the case back to the interviewer. It served dual purposes of helping me grasp the case accurately and if not, then giving the interviewer a chance to correct me. I began with asking the interviewer some preliminary questions such as if there were any other objectives to the case and what other competitor OTT platforms were to be considered.

As I had watched the show, I was aware of its global reach with the number of viewers outside India much greater than within India and the dramatic cliff hanger season 2 ended with.

Interview Experience:

I defined some relevant factors for analysis based on a few standard frameworks and attempted to conform my answer to the same.

Throughout the solving process, I kept the interviewer in loop. He asked contradictory questions at times to put me in a stressful situation and analyse how I dealt with it.

By identifying the factors, I presented the interviewer with a decision framework and based on that I concluded that Netflix should release season 3 to satiate the anticipation of the viewers.

Interview Preparation Tips

Interview preparation tips for other job seekers - Preparation:

During the preparation phase, I majorly focused on preparing for SCM roles with little regard to consulting since I was a fresher and believed I had little to no chance at getting a shortlist. It was only after month and a half at NITIE that I got to know this was not true.

After discussions with my study group and some seniors, I decided to take a shot at the much-coveted consulting domain. In the short timeframe before SIPs, I prepared using Case-in point to understand the various basic frameworks. I indulged in mock case interviews with a dedicated peer group where we usually took the cases mentioned at the end of Case-in point. Similarly, for guesstimates, I used to solve them with my peer group to help learn from each other.

Suggestions:

1) Start your preparations early.

2) Practice case interviews and guesstimates with a dedicated peer group.

3) Don’t rush to answer any questions.

4) Try to create your own frameworks using relevant factors while solving a case rather than conforming to a standard one. (This will come naturally to you only through practice).

1 Interview Round

1

Case Study Round

First phase of shortlisting for Deloitte was video interview. We were supposed to answer 4 questions, each having a time limit of around 2-3 minutes. The shortlisted candidates were given calls for physical interviews.

Interview started with a brief intro and my work
experience. Post that, a mini-case was given.

You are the chairman of IPL and one of the teams is alleged to have involved in match fixing. As a chairman, you should make sure that you don’t lose upon sponsors and viewers. How do you approach? What are the factors you consider? How can you use analytics to address this issue? Can you predict which players might get involved in match fixing?
Approach - I thought for a minute and started solving the case with stakeholder segmentation i.e., divided all the stakeholders related to IPL into 3 categories – sponsors, players and viewers. Asked questions to find out the reason for match fixing (is it a single player or the owner of the franchisee involved in match fixing).

Solution Proposed - If it was individual one or two players involved in match fixing, then those players must be banned for a specific period of time. Also, contracts must be made with sponsors to make sure we don’t lose on them. For the question on analytics usage, I suggested the use of analytics in recording historical data of players, their batting length and other metrics and compare it with their best performance to identify any abnormalities in the player’s behavior.

At the end of interview, I was asked to summarize my case.

Interview Preparation Tips

Interview preparation tips for other job seekers - Preparation:

Based on my profile, I was expecting more of consulting calls and hence, started my preparation for consulting earlier. I first started solving guestimates. After a week or so, I started my case study preparation simultaneously by first studying approach and then moving on to solving cases from NITIE and IIM A Case books. We formed a group of 3 and practiced mock case interviews frequently. Also I gave mock case interviews to seniors during practice. I spent around 3-4 hours on consulting preparation every alternate day. For supply chain preparation, I studied Chopra Meindl and looked on YouTube for real-life supply chain examples.

What went wrong?

I covered the breadth of the topic but didn’t delve deep to find the actual reason for match fixing. My approach was not well framed. I lost my path in the middle. Also, I kept quite while solving the case initially. I was asked to think out loud. The solutions that I proposed were generic and can be more specific to cricket. I have poor knowledge on cricket, so I couldn’t gather many ideas. My case summary didn’t come out like a story and went into bits and pieces.

Suggestions:

1. Be well prepared with CV and HR questions. Have good knowledge on the area of your work ex.

2. Whenever solving case studies always dig 3-4 levels deeper into the problem.

3. Have good knowledge of 2-3 industries and high-level overview of other industries.

4. Quoting examples impresses the recruiter. Keep 2-3 happening examples on the back of your mind for every industry. Mention them at the relevant point of time while solving case.

5. Think out loud and always backup your solutions with a rationale.

6. Finally, stay calm during the interview and don’t panic even if you get it wrong. Always answer questions with a smile and a positive attitude.

Introduce yourself.
Started with basic introduction about self and focused on work experience.

Question from Resume.
I had mentioned an 80% improvement in process - Explained what process was followed, how the improvement was suggested and implemented.

Follow up question on the challenges I faced.
Mentioned about people and skill set mismatch related challenges.

Guesstimate the number of Towers(BTS) in Mumbai - Clarified on the Towers meaning BTS – Base transceiver station for Mobile telephony only, or for other Radio transmission as well.
Number of Users - Started off with the population, number of users based on the telecom penetration.

Number of requests per user – Assumed a number, taking my own example as a general user.

Capacity of a tower - Number of requests a Tower can handle per minute, extrapolating to a day.

Assuming the towers are designed to cater to the demand per day, User Requests / Tower Capacity as the desired number of Towers.

Interview Preparation Tips

Interview preparation tips for other job seekers - Preparations:

• Cases & Guesstimates - My preparation for consulting interviews was very limited. I did spend some time on Case in Point and Victor Cheng Videos in the last few days once the shortlists came out.

• Resume: I had a generic Resume for consulting as well as SCM interviews, which revolved mainly around my Work-Ex in Telecom domain. I was well prepared on questions relating to the same, with instances, challenges etc.

What went wrong?

I did not have the right approach towards the Guesstimate, in fact I would call it too naïve a way of estimating. It was mainly due to lack in preparation and practice. I did not have any specific numbers, and assumed the figures mostly. Also, I did not consider important factors like, the Population density, Load factor, Service providers using same towers etc.

Suggestions:

Do not wait till you get the calls to start preparations. Practice in groups. Also, be prepared with some basic stats relating to your field, city etc.

Group Discussion Round

Our case was about a FMCG company which had more than 100 product and market presence in more than 50 countries including BRICS. The company had plans to become marked leader especially in BRIC, but were facing some serious issues such as rising overhead costs, indirect costs, decrease in earnings per share etc. The company had a traditional ERP system in place. The CFO wanted to go for an advanced ERP system and he had to pitch for the same to the Board of Directors.

The case had 3-4 specific question that were supposed to be answered.
The group discussion was more of a case based activity. In my group there were 8 members. All of us were given a case to read. Two minutes were given to read the case and then 20 minutes were given to discuss the case and prepare a presentation on a piece of chart paper. At the end of 20 minutes the current panel went out and a different panel came in. The team had to present the case presentation to the new panel which was then followed by Q&A.

I had only one round of interview. My interview was purely CV based. I was asked different questions, with most of them being purely from my previous work experience. There were some HR questions like your biggest achievement and challenge in Tata Motors etc. Then at the end I was asked questions like why consulting and why the particular firm.

Interview Preparation Tips

Interview preparation tips for other job seekers - Preparations:

2. HR Questions: The personal questionnaire released by Placement Committee gave a good idea of the basic HR Questions and that sufficed for the interview preparation.

3. Case Practice: Through various case books available like Case In Point.

4. Specific Sectors: I briefly learned about the latest developments in some sectors and also the important terms and jargons.

5. General Awareness: Read newspapers and surfed websites to remain aware about the latest and important news around the globe.

6. Read about the firm through various sources and about the job description.
