5 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: General Resume Shortlist. The company was open for EE, ME and CHE departments. If you have a decent CPI(>8) with a some extra curriculars, you can expect yourself to be safely go through this round. There is an application for with few HR questions , which they use if you reach the interview round,
Tips: Try to cover all aspects in your resume. And make sure whatever you write, you must have the ability to defend it,

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: A person dies and various reasons were mentioned of his death from different perspective. We need to rank those reasons on the basis of discussion.
Tips: In our group. 3-4 odd guys started fighting just in order to prove their point. Therefore those guys that gave 2-3 good points in between, went through the next interview round. Its not about speaking more, but about speaking sensible.
Duration: 20 minutes

Round: Technical + HR Interview
Experience: First Interview was taken by management of the committee, who did not have great experience at the firm. It was mostly resume based. So you must know each and everything about your resume. In my case, since I have done considerable research, their focus was why I am not going to go for research as this would be managerial. The trick was to convince them that this is what I want to do.
Tips: Be confident in what you answer. Always keep in mind that you know yourself more about your projects that anyone else. So even if you don't remember completely. just speak with confidence. This gives them the expression that you know what you are saying,

Round: Technical + HR Interview
Experience: I was given the second round just after my first. They stopped the next candidate going in the panel. and sent me first. That gave me an indication that they are really very serious about taking me. This one was held with the senior management officials of the company. They were more interested about the work I have done earlier in the internships, along with how I can contribute to the organisation. Also they were quite impressed by my answers in the application form.
Tips: If you believe that you have done enough work during your undergraduate, you will yourself feel confident about your chances.

5 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: The initial shortlist was done on the basis of resume, CGPA and Branch.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: It was a case study based GD. Three minutes time was given to read the case which was about a plane which had crashed and the whole scenario was explained. There were 7 survivors and one had to choose an appropriate leader among them who would lead them either out of the jungle to nearest occupied area or help them survive to wait for reinforcements.
It is always good to read the case early and look to initiate the discussion. But be careful to let others read as well. I did the same. Next after putting your points try to steer the discussion in the right direction. People were getting very emotional and excited and were looking to speak without bothering that rest of the participants were listening to them. There was a time in the GD when 5 people out of 8 were speaking at once leading to chaos. I opted to keep quiet and tried to listen as much as I could, appreciating good points put up by few of them. Finally, I interrupted to tell them to speak one by one and passed the discussion to one of them, who was making some valid points. At the end, look to conclude while taking into consideration valid points put up by others (this demonstrates you are an active listener) and add your own creative/innovative points. There were two observers both of whom took my final HR interview.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: In technical round they were three interviewers one was an electrical engineering alumni of IITR who asked me technical questions and rest were mostly observing. Firstly, I was asked Tell me about yourself? I explained about my life at IIT Roorkee, about my participation in Cognizance, about my hobbies like squash and then about my family. I went on speaking for about 15-20 minutes, I was hoping they would interrupt me at some point. Finally, I was left with nothing to say as I had told them everything. They were like Phew!!  As if I was telling them a story. Next, they asked about my internship. What did I do? How as an electrical engineer I gave my inputs to the internship?
Next, they asked about my B.Tech. project? My guides name? What I was doing in the project? I explained it all on a sheet of paper. I don’t think he was able to understand what I was telling, so he interrupted.
Then he asked about my favorite subject in electrical engineering and my grades in that subject. He also inquired about my department rank.
Next he asked me some technical questions: What is floating point neutral? What is earth résistance and some others. I was able to answer most of them and rest which I didn’t know I told him after some deliberation straight away that I didn’t know the right answer. One important thing that helped me here is that I spoke put my thinking process and the interviewer also helped me to reach the final answer. Finally he asked me to tell something interesting about myself? That ended the interview.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: For the next round, there were two interviewers; they asked me why my SGPA had fallen in last semester? I told them as it was a tough semester in EE nd hence my SGPA had dropped. Next they asked me about how I manage conflicting priorities in life. I answered to them in reference to the previous question that after scoring less SGPA in the last semester I was disappointed and in some part of my mind I was blaming my participation in Cognizance as the reason for it. This semester I had to choose to be the convener of the festival. It was an important decision as it would affect my studies. I told them as studies were my top priority in IITR as it always has been. Rather than giving up on the team which I was to lead, I told them I decided to take this as a challenge and correct my mistakes. And now my aim is to score an SGPA over 9 this semester while conducting the festival successfully. They looked impressed and this ended the interview.
Tips: Study your resume well especially internship. Don’t add any internship (2nd year) where you haven’t done anything.Prepare your technical/core subjects practical/application based. Last but not the least, be yourself.

Interview Questions

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: The GD was a typical ITC GD. The problem was similar to the one given during internship GDs. An old man died due to medical emergency and role of various factors up in hierarchy was described. His wife grieved because they did not save enough money for their old age. The doctor did not admit him earlier in accordance with the hospital rules. Similarly, the hospital administration had already exhausted its charitable funds and the government had reduced expenditure on health (the government was elected by the people on this basis as mentioned in their manifesto). Based on the information given, the group was required to rate people/organizations in terms of their responsibility for the old man’s death. Five minutes
were given in the beginning for individual ranking and 20 minutes for discussion and group ranking.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: There were two people in the panel: one from technical background and the other a HR manager. Having known that I was also appearing in other companies on day one, they asked me about which one will I choose if offered by both ITC and Intel. This point came up several times during the interview and resulted in a long debate.
Starting with my internship, they asked me about key learning and technical description of the project and its impact. Discussed leadership roles, long term goals, how does ITC fit into that etc. Questions based on what I had filled in the form were asked, reasons why I did not opt for other options (higher studies, IAS, I-banks) and so on.

General Tips: Most of the times, things go on as they are supposed to, we do what we are assigned, meet deadlines and get it over with. Knowing what to do after four or five years of study at IIT is one of those deciding phases where we have to do something out of routine, think about what we actually want, what we can get from where we are. Here is an account of how I went about making my decisions and preparing for it. In one of those routine placement
talks, a speaker remarked, ‘there are two ways you can choose a career- by extrapolation from what you have right now and by interpolation from your long term goal’. This helps one realize the importance of identification of long term goal. In my opinion, once a person is convinced about that, it is easy to pull off an interview; more importantly, it is easy to identify which options to prepare for.

2 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: The GD was easy, based on a case study.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The first round of interview started with general HR questions like tell me about yourself, why ITC, why not so good cpi in first year and so on. Somehow the mention of industrial tour came and from there on, all the questions were based on TATA steel and steel-making in general (we went to Jamshedpur for our industrial tour). In case of ITC it is very important to know about the company fully. Hence reading the company’s website before the interview helps. I was asked its motto and when I answered it correctly the entire panel was very impressed.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The 2nd round was a one-on-one interview. What went wrong here was that I knew about my major projects (like btp, summer intern) very well but didn't remember the exact details of the TA project that I had done during my 3rd
semester. The interviewer somehow found that project quite interesting and kept on asking me questions about it and I couldn't answer many. Later, he jumped onto the term paper that I had written for one of the psychology courses and again I stumbled. Hence I feel I didn’t know my resume too well at that time (just focused on the main projects) and perhaps that went against me.
