Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: There were many profiles in KPMG for which they wanted to recruit - Strategy and operations consulting, Edu Analyst, etc. Since there was no test conducted for any of these profiles, they directly shortlisted through resume. There seemed to be a CGPA cutoff of 7 looking at the list of candidates who have been called for further rounds.

Round: Guesstimate Interview
Experience: This interview was taken by 2 people. People generally prepare for puzzles, case studies, guesstimates, etc through out the semester. But frankly i went on to sit for these campus placements with very less preparation on any of these. So i was a bit worried on how i can pull of an interview without all of that! What i did realize from the entire experience - from mine and that of my friends, is that the questions given in the interviews are not really tough. One can solve them if he just thinks through the problem there and then itself- without thinking that I have not done this earlier, i didn't prepare, etc. I did do some mistakes while solving the problem, but they helped me to correct them in the process and arrive at the solution.
Tips: Here again as everyone say, YES, What they are looking at is the way you are structuring or solving the problem. How much are you comfortable with numbers, pulling off simple calculations with that, etc. Having said all of that above, about preparation, BUT it does help and a bit of practice earlier only makes one feel more confident for the interview!
Good communication skills is always a plus for any interview. The way you tell about yourself, the work you did, etc. And this is something that any company expects now in the age we live in.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: This interview was taken by 3 people, which is enough to make anyone a bit nervous when you have a panel interviewing rather than a single person. Even i was! Also they were trying to create a STRESS environment by countering most of the things i said or questioning them even more. They were also friendly at the same time. I didn't have prepared answers for any of the questions asked, i was just very honest with them on what i really felt about each one of them. And if there is one thing i learnt from all the interviews - 3 in total that i faced, being honest and confident is the key to crack to the interviews. I think that way i sort of started building a connect with them with the really HONEST answers that i gave them - something that i believed in truly! So they liked me that way.
Tips: Being prepared again with a few basic questions about yourself will help. Like knowing your strengths, why do u want to do that job, etc. It will anyways be helpful to know about yourself through these questions. But be prepared to get any kind of question in this kind of HR interview. Just be Honest. I very much believe in this " Dil ki baat dil pe hi lagti hai" :) :P
Look into the eyes of the panel when you are speaking. Helps build connect with them. Present yourself just the way you are. I m sure, They ll love you! One easy technique to get over these nervousness and all of that is start feeling the panel as someone like your friend, family, etc whom you are just meeting and telling YOUR STORY in those 30-40 min, that will ease out of a lot of things.

General Tips: Although this company didnt take a test. But generally most of the companies did take a test. So prepare for them. Prepare through CAT books, it is enough. Practice can be done on the net as well. For interviews prepare for Guesstimates, Case study and look into some standard puzzles. For case study prep, "Case in point" is the best and will suffice! Others- Guesstimates and puzzles can be looked up for on the net.

Preparation (which will help you be confident as well) + Honesty + Communication skills is the key!!!

Tips: This is the most important step in the recruitment process. So prepare well and try getting shortlisted in more than one section.

Total Questions: 5+4+?

Round: Puzzle Interview
Experience: The logical abilities of one is tested. The questions asked do not require you to know any advanced concepts but just make you think in a non-routine manner. The topics covered were Pigeon Hole Principle, Dynamic Programming, Probability (Expectation Value).

Round: Puzzle Interview
Experience: The logical abilities of one is tested. The questions asked do not
require you to know any advanced concepts but just make you think in a
non-routine manner. The topics covered were (algorithm+discrete math), (probability+combinatorics).

Round: Puzzle Interview
Experience: This was a purely coding interview where the interviewer was just ensuring that I knew how to code. This interview is taken only for people who have nothing (not even courses) to show in the coding front. The questions asked were based on Data Structures and were pretty standard.

Round: Puzzle Interview
Experience: Loads of puzzles were asked and a few questions on basic probability distributions as well.

General Tips: Prepare hard for the test and just be yourself during the interview,
Skills: Analytical Thinking

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Questions

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: Mention only those projects/works which you feel fully confident on, let any question be thrown your way.
Believe me, a simple project explained in a good way is better than a complex project that scares you going into the details.
Tips: A little bit of extra activities (sports/music) helps them picture you as not a total nerd, which might help in front of some interviewers.

Round: Interview
Experience: They will mostly try to trick you here, even if you are right, they will make you doubt yourself. It's just about believing oneself and answering in one go.
Tips: Stick to your answers if you feel it's right, changing it again and again won't do you much good.

Round: Interview
Experience: This is where you have to be most careful, what they seek is just your interest in the company or infact passion for their work and not leaving them mid-way for higher studies or startup plans.
Tips: Diverting talks to some extra-currics might help a lot here specially if they have interest in that too, like the one, I was giving interview to, was wearing a Barcelona cap and I had mentioned that I played football at Inter-Hostel level. So we talked about the recent Premier league for like 10 minutes and the mood was really lightened, thanks to that.

General Tips: It is never too late to be what you might have been.
Skills: Algorithms, Java, Interaction Skills, coding, C, C++
College Name: IIT DELHI
Motivation: The technology (Social-Media Management) they are working on is really interesting to know more about and can be a future pioneer in the coming days.
Funny Moments: One of the interviewer I became so friendly with, mid-way through the interview that we added each other right there on facebook.

  • Q17. You must be getting stipend, right?? In which course were you as a TA?? What did you learn from the course??

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: Criteria was CGPA above 7. Still many above 7 people were not shortlisted including me. But as number of students in CAE profile were around 10, they accepted request of some 10 more students having CGPA > 7.
Tips: Highlight each and every aspect of your academics focusing on M Tech project, mini-projects, courses done, internships and Industrial Training, etc.
Don't hesitate to mention the hardships and problems you faced in your career so far and how did you overcome them.

Round: Test
Experience: No written tests taken in our campus.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: Very general topic. Not that tough.
Tips: When evaluator asks you to summarize the GD, he is not expecting you to keep your views and add more ideas anymore. Instead you must focus on what all things constituted the GD, which person spoke about some new aspect which took GD into a new direction.
I would recommend you to scribble down specific points mentioned by an individual in the GD and highlight them while you summarize.
Please confirm what you are being asked : to summarize or to conclude. Both are different.
Duration: 15-20 min. minutes

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Alstom HR was very calm and maintained composure despite some issues with the TnP. As I was in TnP committee (mentioned in my CV), still she was not arrogant with me. I apologized for the hardships they faced with IITD and assured her of making the necessary changes.
Tips: Being yourself is best. That way you won't be nervous. Open yourself as much as possible just as they say "Khuli Kitab" type.
One specific advice : Do not counter yourself in any way while you speak. HR people job is to figure out who is REAL and who is FAKE??
So make your CV look as much REAL as possible.
Be clear on your goals. As I was asked whether I would like to work in any other area than "Design and Development", I took a stance of not to compromise on the job profile as this is what I am going to do for atleast 2-3 years. So I made it clear that I won't work in any other area.
Don't make blunders while you speak...
For Eg. When my friend was asked "How was your technical interview??"
He being naive replied, "It was good except that I did a mistake of showing entrepreneurship capabilities."
This clearly showed he was trying to be someone. So don't contradict yourself or your resume.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Good. Technical guy was extremely patient to hear every answer I gave. There were no abrupt questions. Only after I finish, he used to ask a new one. Patience in delivering the answer might be of help as Alstom people were having this quality in abundance. It will also give you time to think and repond and not just react hastily.
Tips: Clearly he wanted to see how much a person is interested in job rather than just focussing on CGPA which most companies do.
Relate your project and the courses you have taken in your degree with their profile very effectively.
Do not hesitate to ask questions to them about their personal experiences and queries regarding job profile while interview.
There were no direct questions related to any subject like in most interviews you expect. Only explaining the technicalities behind your project work and courses taken was sufficient.

General Tips: Read well. Do not be desperate for the particular job. Atleast don't show your desperation. You will have many opportunities in future. This is not the end. Infact its just the start.
Skill Tips: Be confident but do not sound arrogant. So humility helps.
Skills: Confidence, Core Courses Concepts, Projects, humility, Patience, Decent communication, Clarity of thoughts
College Name: IIT DELHI
Motivation: Metro is the present and future. To work in design related area in this sector which is just in nascent stages felt challenging.

3 Interview Rounds

Interview Questions

  • Q1. Your client is a consumer goods company in Vietnam. You have to advice them how to maximize their potential in the next 5 years

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Interview
Experience: Vietnam threw me off, but it wasn't rather relevant. Don't let a random case scare you, which you think doesn't fall in the standard profitability/market entry category.
Tips: 1. Clarify the problem statement always. What does maximize potential mean? Revenue/Sales?
2. Think broadly. Cover all possible internal/external factors, mention them even if you think they aren't important, show the interviewer that you thought it at least.

General Tips: Practise! Revise cases that you do. Make a separate book for your buddy cases and for practise cases.Note learnings from every case separately.Dont try fitting every case in a structure, will not work on the final day.Try practising random cases (what bid should ESPN file for Olympic viewing rights?) as it helps broaden your thought process
Skills: Lateral Thinking
College Name: IIT DELHI
Motivation: The people seemed great!
