Interview Questions

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: The Aptitude and Technical sections contain 25 questions each. There were three types of tests - Mechanical, ECE and Software. I wrote the mechanical test. The technical section contained questions from courses in aerospace, mechanical and few from material sciences. I couldn't solve all the questions. Probably solved around 60% of the paper perfectly and guessed the remaining.
Tips: There won't be enough time to finish the paper, so we must solve fast. Also, there isn't any negative marking. So, take advantage.
Duration: 60 minutes
Total Questions: 50

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: The interview went smoothly. I was able to answer most of the questions. If I didn't know the answer to a question, I said I didn't know. The interviewer was kind enough to clear my doubts. The questions asked were of the basics in gas dynamics.
Tips: Be confident in whatever you say. Say that you don't know the answer directly if that's the case. Expect questions from the BASICS of the core courses you have taken. It helps if you have done a good project or internship elsewhere. Also make sure that you convey your area of interest/s very clearly.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The interview went well. I was fairly confident in answering the questions.
Tips: Show confidence, speak freely and make sure you smile. We all know the kind of questions that would be asked in a HR interview. So prepare yourself beforehand, but make sure it doesn't sound like you're reciting something you have mugged. It should be like a general conversation.

General Tips: Be honest. Don't make up things. If the interviewer(HR in particular) thinks you are bluffing about your opinion on a certain topic, make sure that you have facts backing up your opinion. Working on a decent core project/internship beforehand would be very helpful. Apply only if you are deeply motivated to work for a core company, the interviewers would find out anyway if your interest lies elsewhere. See that you have material relevant to the internship profiles offered by the company. And always be confident in body language and conversation.

Motivation: I'm an aviation enthusiast and it's my dream to work for the giants in this field. General Electric engines are the most reliable engines in the commercial aviation industry and I see this segment of aviation being a monopoly

Tips: I was focused on Tata motors that day assuming that Tata interview will be resume based. GE interviews are generally very tech based and need to be technically very sound. I had no time to do that.
Mock interviews with friends helps

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: Had a lot of technical stuff in the resume and edited out the co-curriculars. But I guess was shortlisted based on my performance in the test, as a lot of others with stronger resumes (technically) were not shortlisted.
Tips: GE while shortlisting engineering talent at IIT's doesn't care much about the extra-curriculars. And we tend to have a lot of them on our resumes. Would suggest emphasizing the projects done and the impact of those in the resumes.

Round: Test
Experience: The test was basically around the fundamentals of Mechanical Engg. Not very difficult but tested the candidate on fundamental concepts.
Tips: A basic prep of relevant coursework should suffice.

Round: Interview
Experience: A lot of emphasis on my coursework and Dual Degree Project. Most of the discussion revolved around the DDP and adjacent fields. Apart from the technical details the interviewer curious about the impact that the project would finally create. This, as I understand now, is a requirement for the profile we're hired into.
Some guys had two rounds of technical interviews but in my case the interviewer after one round had made it very clear that I had got the job. I later understood that most of the people had two rounds and very few had a single round.
Tips: Steer the discussion toward your strengths. The interviewers are generally very friendly, but don't bullshit them as most of them are individuals who occupy engineering leadership roles at GE's Bangalore Center.
Be prepared to do some math on a paper, I was asked to formulate some of the stuff I was talking about my DDP. If you don't know something it is better to shut up than speculate.

Round: Interview
Experience: Was basically a formality, the interviewer chatted for a while about what I had done at IIT, what I liked/disliked about my college. Asked me to rate myself on a few things. Asked my rationale behind the evaluation.
Tips: In my opinion the HR interview is just a show. The technical interview IS the interview. If get that right you're through.

General Tips: If you're technically sound should not be difficult to crack this.
College Name: IIT Madras
Motivation: The EEDP program is a good profile for people who're interested to pursue careers in engineering. GE as an engineering brand is huge.
