At the very outset, i would like to describe the school and the working environment at Open Minds – A birla school (Danapur franchise). This is written from the perspective of a PGT who worked here for close to two years. The whole school is divided into three wings each headed by a Coordinator (rank of a teacher). I will be focusing my findings on the middle wing headed by deepika srivastava. Middle wing is from class 6 to class 12. There is also a PT Wing headed by Karan sharma. He reports directly to Principal. Class 6 to class 8 has 3 sections each i.e. 9 sections. Class 9 and 10 have 2 overcrowded sections each i.e. 4 sections Class 11 and 12 have 2 sections each for PCM+PCB and commerce. i.e. 4 sections Total of 17 sections having roughly 50 students each. Class 11 and 12 have relatively fewer admissions. Now there is a serious shortage of teaching staff in the school. When you as a parent or teacher enter this school for the first time, it looks very shining and polished but beware of the outer appearances, the rot stems from within. The school has a excess of support staff i.e cleaners, maids and bouncers. Every effort is made to glimmer the school for pure marketing and PR purposes. In rural slang, “yaha sirf focusebazi hoti hai” Total focus is on PT and Reps, Falna competition , Dhekna Competition, Eco Club etc. The school does not produces a single topper in class 10 or 12 due to poor academic conditions. Every activity is designed in a way so that maximum publicity can be obtained by using Youtube and Instagram. Coming back to the shortage of teachers from class 6 to 12, there are only 4 english teachers (1 teacher from the primary wing i.e. effectively 3 teachers). You can only imagine the workload of the poor folks who work like donkeys. In classes 6 to 10 there are only 2 hindi teachers, 2 social studies teacher, 3 maths teacher, 1 german teacher (teaches till class 8 and also takes primary sections), 1 science teacher, 1 chemistry teacher, 1 biology teacher and 1 physics teacher. Yes you heard that right. This is the level of ad-hocism in the school which charges one time admission fees of 1,20,000 from students and 10,000 monthly. The buildings are also not equipped to handle earthquakes (there are already cracks appaering in the building visible from the first floor to the fourth floor). So beware of the structure. Now the principal dresses and puts on makeup like a model and drinks Caviar juice (I’m not joking). She does not even have a teaching background and the Vice president is her remote control similar to manmohan singh as Prime minister. Both of them are armchair administrators with the Viceprincipal having some apparent experience. Both of them have made the lives of the teachers miserable in and outside the campus. The teaching standards are also poor with attrition rate among the teachers being very high. In the month of April 2022, i saw two brilliant teacher (1 from biology and another from English) leave the school. The manner in which they left is interesting (after collecting the salary due from school).So if you are planning to join the school, then negotiate your salary from a position of strength and demand high salary as once you enter, forget abour getting increments. My personal suggestion would be to avoid the school altogether. Get a grip in the another good school in Patna. The main problem is Inadequate Salary and poor working conditions. The absenty rate of teachers is very high due to high work load. They have even hired a separate substitute teacher to handle the classes of these absenting teachers. Another big problem is that like every other school, this school is a den of office politics. Some teachers are part of the old guard (having service of over 8-12 years – you can see their names in the Attendance register named OM at last, not DDMT), these teachers are like personal spies of the principal, so avoid spending time with them. Avoid criticising the management in any way, shape or form in front of any teacher inside or outside the school or even outside your wing. You never know. There is no Job security in the organisation with rivalries among teachers common. Remember once you join, you will never breathe a sigh of relief. Your personal life will become an absolute hell. Remember that you can climb up the ladder and survive by Licking the feet of the Coordinator and the Principal. The working hours are 7.5 hours as teaching is for 6 hours and they will disperse you 1.5 hours after the time of dispersal of students. So , 8 hours everday is the actual working hours. Salary of any month is given in the following month in the 3rd week. You will have to run from place to place to enquire about the salary. SALARY for the vacation period may be and may not be paid according to your arrangements with the Principal. When you enter the school, negotiate all of this in advance so as to avoid future confusion. Generally the old guard and some other teachers are paid in full, others are not so lucky. TGT fresher should demand 28,000 and more. (more given to science and maths teachers) PGT fresher can demand 35,000 and more. (more will be given to maths and science stream) Experienced should demand more as according to my knowledge Coordinator and 3 teachers have salary above 50,000. Cannot reveal their names but once you start working here, you will know who gets what. Final review- Do not join this school except when you are too desperate for a job. Always remember that danapur school is a franchise, you can work at jaganpura open minds too (its much better here, trust me).
