'Like a field plowed prior to planting': Researchers want to grow lasers, yes lasers, on material commonly found in sand
- Researchers at Imec have found a way to grow lasers directly on silicon
- Imec’s lasers use gallium arsenide, a material that doesn’t naturally bond with silicon
- This breakthrough could lower costs and improve photonic chips for AI and telecom
- The discovery could lead to more affordable and scalable photonic devices, transforming applications in data communication, machine learning, and AI

Growing a Gallium-Arsenide Laser Directly on Silicon
- Researchers from IMEC have successfully grown gallium-arsenide (GaAs) lasers directly on silicon wafers.
- The lasers were grown on industry-standard 300mm silicon wafers using standard processes and materials.
- The technique involves creating trenches in a layer of silicon dioxide on the wafer to confine the lattice mismatch between GaAs and silicon within those trenches.
- Although there are still some issues to address, such as the lasers working at a shorter wavelength and durability concerns, the development brings the mass-production of GaAs lasers on silicon closer to reality.
