Teen on Musk’s DOGE Team Graduated from ‘The Com’
- A 19-year old working for Elon Musk’s DOGE was given access to sensitive US government systems despite past association with cybercrime communities.
- Musk’s DOGE team has gained access to staggering amount of personal and sensitive data from government databases.
- Edward Coristine, one of the young technologists on Musk’s DOGE crew is the founder of Tesla.Sexy LLC and was set up around 16 years old in 2021.
- Coristine's association with Russian-registered domains Helfie and DiamondCDN, a company that specializes in protecting customers from DDoS attacks attracts concern.
- The Wired's report found that someone using a Telegram handle tied to Coristine solicited a DDoS-for-hire service in 2022 and he worked for a short time at Path Networks, a network monitoring firm known for hiring reformed blackhat hackers.
- Less than 24 hours after KrebsOnSecurity exposed BackConnect Security LLC's history of hijacking Internet address space that belonged to others, KrebsOnSecurity.com was hit with the biggest DDoS attack the Internet had ever seen at the time.
- DOGE staff member Marko Elez resigned after being linked to a deleted social media account that advocated racism and eugenics, earlier this week.
- The DOJ said access to federal payment systems would be limited to two people, Elez and Tom Krause, the CEO of a company called Cloud Software Group.
- While Trump and JD Vance have endorsed the idea to rehire Elez, Musk said he plans to rehire him. But multiple parties have sued to stop DOGE’s activities and the U.S. Treasury Department had agreed not to give Musk’s team access to its payment systems while a judge is hearing arguments in a lawsuit alleging Musk illegally searched those records.
- At least 13 state attorney general say they plan to file a lawsuit to stop DOGE from accessing federal payment systems. A California student association has also sued the Department of Education (DoE) demanding an “immediate stop” to DOGE’s “unlawfully” digging through student loan data.

Federal judge tightens DOGE leash over critical Treasury payment system access
- Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has had its access to US Treasury payment systems restricted after The Alliance for Retired Americans, the American Federation of Government Employees, and the Service Employees International Union sued the Treasury Department.
- Concerned that this sensitive information was improperly disclosed to DOGE aides, the groups argue that DOGE's access violated privacy protections.
- The federal judge, Colleen Kollar-Kotelly in Washington DC, has limited DOGE's access to systems within the Bureau of the Fiscal Service (BFS), granting just read-only privileges to just two DOGE aides.
- The Treasury's BFS systems process the federal government's payments and collections and maintains financial and personal data on millions of Americans who have received or sent funds to the federal government.
- The lawsuit alleges that David A. Lebryk, the career official overseeing Treasury payment systems, initially rebuffed DOGE's access requests. However, after Scott Bessent was sworn in as Treasury Secretary, he placed Lebryk on administrative leave, and DOGE-affiliated individuals were reportedly granted full access to BFS data and systems.
- The order issued by Judge Kollar-Kotell is technically a temporary restraining order, which will remain in effect while the court reviews whether to issue a longer-term preliminary injunction.
- That proposed injunction aims to extend the just-granted restraining order, barring the Treasury Department from disclosing any personal information to DOGE-affiliated individuals. It would also require Bessent to ensure that any data already accessed by DOGE is retrieved and safeguarded.
- The court has ordered the Treasury to respond to the motion for a preliminary injunction by February 12, with a hearing on the matter scheduled for February 24.
- The Treasury, its DoJ lawyer, or the White House have to date not responded to questions.
- Cloud Software Group, which owns Citrix and Netscaler and from 2022 has been led by DOGE's Tom Krause, is funded by Vista Private Equity, whose CEO Robert F. Smith coincidentally in 2020 agreed to pay the federal government $139m for his involvement in what was alleged to be a huge "international tax fraud scheme."

Elon Musk’s DOGE Leashed by Judge in Treasury Case
- A judge has limited Elon Musk’s efficiency group’s access to the Treasury Department’s payment system.
- The order blocks the Treasury from offering access "to any payment record or payment system of records maintained by or within the Bureau of the Fiscal Service," with some exceptions, as the judge weighs the unions’ request for a broader temporary restraining order.
- The order allows "read only" access to two "special government employees" Treasury recently brought in who have ties to Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE): Tom Krause, CEO of Cloud Software Group, and Marko Elez, a 25-year-old engineer who has worked for two Musk companies: SpaceX and his social-media platform X.
- Concerns about DOGE’s access to the inner workings of the government seem to have reached the White House, at least on some level.
