Job Title: SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) Operator

Job Overview:
The SEM Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM) to capture high-resolution images of the surfaces and structures of materials for research, analysis, and development purposes. The role involves preparing samples, calibrating instruments, collecting and interpreting data, and ensuring the SEM is functioning optimally.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Instrument Operation:
• Operate and monitor the SEM equipment to capture detailed images of samples at varying magnifications.
• Adjust and optimize microscope settings (e.g., electron beam current, accelerating voltage, focus, and contrast) for high-quality imaging.
• Perform scans and record images for detailed analysis, ensuring image quality and clarity.
2. Sample Preparation:
• Prepare samples for SEM analysis by cleaning, coating (with conductive material if necessary), and mounting them properly on the microscope stage.
• Ensure that samples are handled in accordance with laboratory safety standards and SEM operating procedures.
3. Data Collection & Analysis:
• Conduct imaging, measurement, and analysis of samples to study surface structures, defects, morphology, and composition.
• If applicable, use additional techniques like Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) for elemental analysis of the sample.
• Record and document findings in the form of images, charts, and reports for internal use or publication.
4. Equipment Maintenance & Calibration:
• Regularly inspect, maintain, and calibrate the SEM to ensure optimal functionality.
• Troubleshoot and resolve any technical issues or malfunctions with the microscope or related equipment.
• Ensure that the SEM is kept in clean, operational condition and follow safety procedures for high-voltage equipment.
5. Collaboration & Communication:
• Work closely with researchers, engineers, and other laboratory staff to understand experimental objectives and contribute to research projects.
• Share findings and results with the team, offering insights from SEM analysis to guide decision-making or further investigations.
6. Safety and Compliance:
• Adhere to all laboratory safety protocols, including those related to SEM operations, handling of samples, and use of chemicals or materials.
• Ensure the SEM area is compliant with environmental health and safety regulations.
• Maintain proper documentation of sample handling and SEM usage.
7. Training & Support:
• Train and assist other laboratory personnel or researchers on the proper use of SEM equipment and related techniques.
• Keep up to date with new SEM technologies, techniques, and best practices.

Skills & Qualifications:

• Education: A degree in materials science, chemistry, physics, engineering, or a related field is typically required. A technical certification in electron microscopy may be preferred.
• Experience: Previous experience with scanning electron microscopes and related analytical techniques is essential, either in research, industrial, or academic setting.
• Technical Skills:
• Proficient in SEM operation, sample preparation, and troubleshooting.
• Knowledge of image analysis software and data interpretation techniques.
• Familiarity with EDS or similar spectroscopy techniques.
• Attention to Detail: Ability to produce high-quality data and interpret intricate features of samples.
• Communication Skills: Ability to effectively communicate findings, both verbally and in writing.
• Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and adjust parameters for optimal imaging.

Working Conditions:
