Optical Engineer

POSITION OVERVIEW:

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Optical Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will be skilled in Zemax OpticStudio, LightTools and Optisystem simulations and adept at selecting optical and electronic components for various applications, including Free Space Optical Communication (FSOC), range finding and other cutting-edge optical technologies. The role will involve designing, analyzing and optimizing optical systems, ensuring proper alignment of optics and understanding coating requirements to achieve desired optical performance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Optical Design and Simulation:

• Use Zemax OpticStudio to design and simulate optical systems for FSOC, range finding and other innovative optical technologies.
• Experience with LightTools for illumination and stray light simulation.
• Perform optimization and tolerance analysis for robust system designs.

Component Selection:

• Experience with OptiSystem for the design, simulation and optimization of optical communication systems.
• Evaluate and select appropriate optical and electronic components to meet specific system requirements.
• Research and procure lenses, mirrors, detectors, lasers and other optical/electronic elements.

Optical Alignment and Assembly:

• Align and assemble optical systems with precision to ensure optimal performance.
• Utilize alignment tools and techniques to meet stringent optical tolerances.

Coating Knowledge:

• Understand and select appropriate coatings (e.g., anti-reflective, high-reflective, dichroic) for lenses, mirrors and other optical components based on system needs.
• Collaborate with coating vendors to meet technical specifications.
• Collaboration and Technical Writing:
• Work closely with engineers and scientists to integrate optical designs into broader systems.
• Document design processes, component selection rationale and test results.
• Project proposal writing.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Educational Background: Pursuing or recently completed Masters degree in Optics, Photonics, Physics, Electronics Engineering or a related field.

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

• Proficiency in Zemax OpticStudio, LightTools, Optisystem for optical design and simulation.
• Familiarity with optical alignment techniques and tools (e.g., autocollimators, alignment lasers).
• Basic understanding of electronic components used in optical systems.
• Hands-on experience in optical prototyping and testing.

KNOWLEDGE AREAS:

• Strong grasp of optical principles, including ray tracing, beam propagation and aberration correction.
• Knowledge of coating types, functions and selection for optical components.
