To use a variety of research and investigative methods to conduct field investigations in PETA India s focus areas, including the use of animals for experimentation, food, clothing, entertainment, and labour and the pet trade, as well as investigations into the environmental and human health hazards related to these issues
Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
Conduct assigned short- and long-term investigations including covert investigations from beginning to end, including the following duties:
Conduct desk research on animal protection laws and issues including by analysing technical papers, watching videos, and employing any number of means in order to prepare thoroughly for investigations and create a comprehensive checklist
Travel to and stay on location for various assignments for as long as necessary (including for several weeks or months at a time, if required)
Use various methods to visit industries that use animals
Obtain, inspect, and keep copies of relevant documents and paperwork from government offices, businesses, and industries during investigations, as required
Develop and work with trusted contacts during investigations and ensure that confidentiality is maintained at all times
Submit detailed daily log notes in an orderly fashion
Use photography and videography to document the conditions and use of animals as well as illegal, cruel, and improper conduct
Strictly adhere to department standard operating procedures (SOP) to ensure legal compliance and that materials can be submitted to the police and courts where required
Log photos, videos, and other documentation carefully and meticulously on a daily basis per SOP
View and transcribe videos and select scenes for use in video edits
Work with in-house counsels to assess evidence for violations of laws
Work with experts, as required, to assess investigation findings
Prepare detailed reports of findings, with a clear narrative
Perform a variety of tasks to prepare for the public release of investigation findings
Cooperate fully in police and court proceedings that result from investigations, as needed
Behave legally and professionally and bring issues of concern immediately to the supervisor s attention
Where it may be necessary to have a trusted volunteer or contractor do the investigation for PETA India because of their credentials, language skills, or other reason, recruit and work closely with that person(s), ensuring professionalism and thoroughness in their work and that confidentiality is maintained
Maintain strict confidentiality at all times
Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor
Qualifications:
Investigative journalism or other appropriate experience in a related field or relevant experience preferred
Basic veterinary knowledge or experience a plus
Experience and confidence with audio-visual equipment
Thorough knowledge of animal protection laws
Thorough knowledge of animal rights issues and PETA India campaigns
Fluency in English and Hindi
Fluency in other Indian languages a plus
Proven ability to conduct in-depth research using a variety of means
Proven exceptional written and verbal communication skills
Diligent attention to detail and the ability to handle the stress and trauma of witnessing animal abuse
Willingness and ability to follow instructions carefully
Proven excellent organisational skills
Ability to make sound judgements and to work independently in stressful environments
Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and use discretion at all times
Willingness and ability to travel and be away from home, including for months at a time, if required
