Role & responsibilities

Some of the procedures that IRs perform include:

• Angiography: An X-ray of the arteries and veins to check for blockages or narrowing
• Angioplasty: A small balloon-tipped catheter is inserted into a blood vessel and inflated to open up a blockage
• Embolization: A substance is inserted into a blood vessel through a catheter to stop blood flow
• Gastrostomy tubes: A feeding tube is inserted into the stomach if the patient can't take food orally
• Intravascular ultrasound: Ultrasound is used to see inside a blood vessel to identify problems
• Stent placement: A small mesh coil (stent) is inserted into a blood vessel at the site of a blockage

MBBS, MD/DNB-Radiology, DM/DNB-Interventional Radiology, Fellow in Interventional Radiology
