Java - Dev/Lead/Architect

Job Summary :

The API Tester is responsible for testing APIs to ensure that they perform their intended functions reliably, securely, and efficiently. This role involves creating test cases, executing tests, and analyzing API responses to ensure that all APIs work correctly and meet business requirements. The API Tester collaborates closely with developers, QA engineers, and product teams to identify and fix defects and ensure that APIs meet the necessary quality standards.

Key Responsibilities :

1. API Test Planning :

• Analyze API documentation, user stories, and requirements to develop test cases and test scenarios.
• Collaborate with development teams to understand the design and functionality of APIs.
• Design and implement test plans and test strategies for API validation.

2. Manual API Testing :

• Perform manual testing of RESTful and SOAP APIs using tools like Postman , SoapUI , or similar tools.
• Verify that the API endpoints work correctly, ensuring proper HTTP status codes, response times, and data accuracy.
• Validate data consistency, response format (JSON, XML), and error handling in API responses.
• Test different HTTP methods (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE) and ensure they function as expected.

3. Automated API Testing :

• Develop and maintain automated tests for APIs using frameworks such as RestAssured , Postman , or Swagger .
• Automate functional and regression test cases to increase test coverage and reduce manual effort.
• Integrate API tests into continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines to ensure seamless testing in an automated environment.
• Write scripts for API testing using programming languages like Java , Python , or JavaScript .

4. Performance Testing :

• Perform load and stress testing on APIs to assess performance under different usage scenarios.
• Identify bottlenecks and optimize API performance.
• Use performance testing tools like JMeter , LoadRunner , or Gatling .

5. Security Testing :

• Conduct security testing to identify vulnerabilities in APIs, including testing for authentication and authorization issues.
• Ensure compliance with security best practices, such as OWASP API Security .

6. Error Handling and Fault Tolerance Testing :

• Test APIs for proper error handling (e.g., 4xx and 5xx errors) and ensure that the API fails gracefully under incorrect conditions.
• Validate the robustness of APIs in handling malformed requests, invalid data, and timeout conditions.

7. Collaboration & Reporting :

• Work closely with developers to understand the API design and functionality.
• Report bugs, defects, and issues clearly using tools like JIRA , providing detailed steps to reproduce the issue.
• Create detailed test reports and document test cases, execution results, and defects for tracking and analysis.
• Participate in daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and other Agile activities to align testing efforts with the development process.

8. Continuous Improvement :

• Review and improve test scripts and automation frameworks to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and coverage.
• Stay up-to-date with the latest trends in API testing tools, methods, and best practices.
• Provide recommendations for improving API testing processes and test coverage.

Required Skills and Qualifications :

• Education : Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
• Experience :
  • Proven experience as an API Tester or in a similar testing role.
  • Strong experience in testing RESTful APIs, SOAP APIs, and Web Services.
  • Experience with tools like Postman , SoapUI , RestAssured , JMeter , and Swagger .
  • Knowledge of HTTP methods (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE), HTTP status codes, and response formats (JSON, XML).
  • Understanding of security testing concepts related to APIs, such as OAuth , JWT , and API authentication/authorization .
  • Experience with test automation frameworks and scripting languages (e.g., Java , Python , JavaScript ).
  • Familiarity with version control systems like Git .
  • Experience with CI/CD tools like Jenkins , GitLab CI , CircleCI , etc.

Preferred Skills :

• Performance Testing : Experience with performance testing tools like JMeter , Gatling , or LoadRunner .
• Cloud Knowledge : Experience testing APIs in cloud platforms like AWS , Azure , or Google Cloud .
• Agile Experience : Familiarity with Agile methodologies and tools like JIRA , Confluence , or Trello .
• Database Testing : Knowledge of SQL for validating API data against databases.
• Security Testing : Familiarity with API security testing standards (e.g., OWASP API Top 10 ).
