Financial Counsellor

1. Patient Financial Assistance:
   
• Assess patients' financial situations and determine eligibility for financial assistance programs (e.g., Medicaid, charity care, insurance coverage).
• Provide clear and detailed explanations of the costs associated with medical procedures, treatments, and hospital stays.
• Help patients understand their insurance benefits, co-pays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket expenses.
• Offer advice on payment options, including setting up payment plans or exploring external funding resources (e.g., loans, credit options).
2. Insurance Guidance:
   
• Educate patients about the insurance policies that apply to their care, including the understanding of health plans, networks, and providers.
• Assist with the insurance verification process to ensure that services are covered and that patients are informed about their out-of-pocket costs.
• Work closely with the insurance companies to resolve billing discrepancies, pre-approvals, and claims.
3. Billing and Payment Support:
   
• Assist patients in reviewing and understanding medical bills and charges, identifying discrepancies or errors.
• Guide patients on how to dispute charges, work with billing departments, or negotiate payment arrangements if necessary.
• Offer support in applying for hardship programs, grants, or other financial aid to cover medical costs.
4. Financial Planning and Counseling:
   
• Provide one-on-one financial counseling sessions to help patients and their families develop strategies for managing healthcare-related expenses.
• Offer budgeting advice and help patients prioritize medical expenses within their broader financial context.
• Assist with the long-term financial planning for ongoing treatments or chronic care management.
5. Record Keeping and Documentation:
   
• Maintain accurate records of patient interactions, financial assessments, assistance provided, and relevant documentation.
• Ensure compliance with healthcare privacy regulations (e.g., HIPAA) when handling sensitive financial information.
• Track patient financial status and update records to reflect changes in circumstances (e.g., income, insurance, or financial assistance eligibility).
6. Collaboration with Healthcare Teams:
   
• Work in collaboration with medical professionals, social workers, and case managers to ensure that financial barriers do not hinder patient care.
• Participate in interdisciplinary care team meetings when necessary to advocate for the patients financial needs.
7. Continuous Education and Training:
   
• Stay updated on healthcare insurance policies, government assistance programs, and new financial assistance resources.
• Attend relevant workshops, conferences, or training to improve knowledge of the healthcare financial system and support available to patients.
8. Client Advocacy:
   
• Act as an advocate for patients in dealing with the healthcare system and insurance companies.
• Empower patients to make informed decisions about their healthcare and finances, providing options when possible.
