Role & responsibilities
Lactation Counsellor :
To coordinate and monitor the care of newborns and provide lactation support to new mothers in the postpartum period.
Document & Identify high risk factors and problems, which may require consultation and intervention, and plans for appropriate follow up.
Collaborates with other members of the health care team to identify parent's
educational and competency gaps related to breastfeeding and newborn assessment
The Lactation Consultant is responsible for providing safe, family-centered patient care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating lactation plans for the breastfeeding/chest-feeding dyad, as well as for the pumping parent, and is fully collaborative with the patient, patients family.
To develop feeding plans for a range of infants from the normal newborn to the complex neonate. She/he makes clinical assessments, and uses current lactation theories and research to develop holistic, evidence-based breastfeeding support and feeding plans that address individual feeding issues.
Conducts prenatal breastfeeding classes and evaluates educational outcomes.
Provide emotional support for continued breastfeeding in difficult or complicated circumstances.
Preferred candidate profile
Assessing mothers and children in developing individualized breastfeeding management strategies.
