Engineer 1 Systems Admin - Contract Role 1yr

Mimecasts Global Technical Operations department is responsible for maintaining 16 data center colocations across seven countries. We seek a self-motivated, team-oriented individual who thrives in fast-paced, agile environments. The ideal candidate will have a robust technical background and experience in the data center industry.

We are looking for someone to join our existing worldwide team to be responsible for hardware maintenance of our data centre servers. In addition to this, the ideal candidate must have a technical background with experience in the Data Centre industry.

Please note, this position is a 1 year contract with the possibility to extend for a further year.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop global standards, process improvements, and promote best practices
• Troubleshoot and repair hardware faults on enterprise servers
• Facilitate hardware upgrades on servers
• Assist with new server racking and provisioning
• Assist with old server decommissioning
• Audit and control stock levels of spare parts in the data centres
• Maintain uptime of our live servers within SLAs
• Manage workflow through JIRA ticketing system
• Check and respond to emails on a daily basis
• Apply firmware upgrades to servers
• Configure and fix BMC configurations on servers
• Observe and fix alerts from our monitoring systems
• Communicate and process RMAs with vendors
• Send reports on a frequent pre-defined basis
• Monitor and manage ticket queues for our data centre colocations
• Facilitate cross-functional communication with other Technical Operation groups
• Participate in conference calls with vendors, suppliers, and team members
• Collaborate with Data Centre Engineers globally for remote hands assistance
• Participate in on-call rotations, including emergency out-of-hours work
• Assist with server provisioning and deployment
• Report on server monitoring and other activities to the team

Essential Skills and Experience

• Bachelor of Science degree in a related field
• Extensive knowledge of server hardware
• Proven experience in troubleshooting server hardware faults in large-scale data centers
  Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Proficiency in Linux operating systems such as CentOS
• Experience with ticketing systems like JIRA or equivalents
• Experience with firmware management for server hardware components
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
• Understanding of BIOS, BMC, out-of-band/lights-out server communication methods (e.g., IPMI, serial console)
• Experience with monitoring systems such as Nagios
• Ability to prioritize tasks in a complex, fast-paced environment

Desirable Skills

• Knowledge of data center best practices (e.g., fault tolerance, cable routing)
• Experience with heterogeneous server/network failures involving Linux OS and Junos
• Experience in data center hardware deployments and scaling infrastructure
• Adaptability to changing demands and conditions
• Resilience in the face of setbacks or pressure
