Senior Database Engineer

The primary purpose of the Senior Database Engineer Role is to provide the organisation with an efficient, functional, and stable database environment across multiple platforms including on-premise and in Azure. The role shall also provide support to the business and technology departments in the use of MUFG Pension & Market Services SQL server-based application systems and database tools and technologies. An individual will ensure service requests are appropriately actioned according to service levels and performance targets and must have previous experience supporting large complex application environments.

Key Accountabilities and main responsibilities

Strategic Focus

• Support multiple large databases on SQL Server, hosted on-premise and on Azure.
• Analyse, develop and implement processes to secure, reduce downtime and optimise Database performance.
• Understand in detail and apply new and emerging technology in Database Services including Cloud computing, HA, DR, backup, and Recovery.
• Provide technical support to core business application environments to ensure 24x7 database availability.
• Drive innovation using the new features in Database software.
• Perform migration/transition activities to cloud from a Database perspective.
• Evaluate software suitability and viability to determine its usefulness in addressing the needs of MUFG Retirement Solutions.
• Evaluate the third party/vendor tools to optimize the cost and performance of hardware & software.

Operational Management

• Provide DBA Support to MUFG Retirement Solutions SQL Server Databases including:

1. Maintaining and enhancing current procedures
2. Upgrading and patching SQL Server from earlier versions
3. Backup & Recovery of databases and process improvements
4. Database performance assessment and optimisation
5. Implement technologies related to Replication, Mirroring, Log Shipping, Availability groups, Partitioning.
6. Migration and data movement to Azure
7. Prepare and manage the SQL Database

• Handling large databases to the size of (1TB+) and associated performance challenges.
• Supporting metadata packages (SSIS) for reporting purposes
• Assist in maintaining Data Quality and Data Integrity
• Perform capacity planning and ensure adequate capacity for database growth and system storage.
• Provide recommendations on systems configuration and operational infrastructure as required by management.
• Perform regular project and system health checks via effective monitoring and raise system status alerts and escalation where appropriate.
• Raise change controls for any emergency/regular changes as required.
• Performance tuning of databases, queries & reports.
• Modifying the database structure, as necessary, from information given by application developers and the business.
• Maintenance/creation of User accesses, monitoring and maintenance of system security.
• Implement and Review Disaster Recovery strategy.
• Diagnose, resolve and perform root cause analysis of database performance issues.
• Identify, collect requirements, develop workflows to automate DBA processes.
• Identify and document problem workarounds and provide support for scheduled release upgrades and deployments.

People Leadership

• Coach and mentor team members to strengthen specific knowledge/skill within the technology area.
• Provide training to the IT support teams on supported tools and environments.
• Prepare support and on call rosters for the team.
• Take over as the 2 IC for the Team Leader as and when required.

Governance & Risk

• Develop and Maintain Documentation related to Standard Operating Procedures and ensure Database Administration practice follows the Information and data security policies.
• Manage and resolve Information Security Corrective actions.
• Raise security issues and breaches to the Supervisor and report to Management of any issues that may impact the Business.
• Maintain awareness and champion ITIL best practices.
• Adhere to all MUFG s standards, policies and procedures.
• Complete the Customer Service Agreements (CSAs) on time.
• Monitoring service levels for Incidents and Requests and implementing improvement programs to achieve objectives.

Experience & Personal Attributes

Experience

• Over 8 -10 Years experience with Minimum of 5+ years relevant experience working with large SQL Server Database
• Experience in Supporting multiple Database Environments
• Expertise in Oracle RDBMS and SQL problem solving and scripting is essential.
• Experience in other RDBMS streams like PostgreSQL, MySQL, Ingress, SQL Server is desirable.
• Strong working experience in Oracle Exadata Database Machine.
• Experience with Oracle RAC, Oracle ASM, DataGuard and Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM).
• Experience in PL/SQL programming, data analysis and design.
• Sound knowledge of database architecture, integration issues, third party reporting and data extraction tools.
• Experience in performance analysis, performance tuning and optimization (PTO), using native monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
• Sound knowledge of MS Office Products and PowerBI to support PowerBI gateway and dashboards.
• Competency across a blend of operating systems such as Windows and Linux including Active Directory and proper disk configurations.
• Hands on experience with Azure SQL and Azure Data Factory.
• Experience in Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services, Analysis Services and SSIS.
• Knowledge of High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for SQL Server.
• Experience with technical documentation and content management.
• Exposure to business contingency standards and acceptable practices that comply with statutory and audit requirements.
• Microsoft Certification is preferred - MCTS, MCITP.
• Database planning and scheduling experience is required.
• Knowledge of shell scripting (e.g PowerShell) or any automation tools to make automation processes/dashboards.
• Shall be able to investigate and resolve data related problems.
