Role Summary
WSP is seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and delivery-oriented candidate who has practical experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and a profound interest in GIS technologies and updates. The Assistant GIS Consultant- Web GIS developer will assist with data management and mapping activities related to Contaminated lands, Environmental Planning, Ecology and Environmental Impact Assessment, Archaeology, Heritage, Indigenous Relations and other environmental investigations projects. Outputs and maps would be based on input and requests from the Earth and Environment business line in Ontario and elsewhere in Canada. All deliverables produced shall comply with WSP Canada standards and procedures, as well as provincial regulations, standards and guidelines.
Responsibilities
The role would involve:
- Perform GIS mapping, database development and qualitative/quantitative analysis as a member of a national team. Working in various fields including but not limited to archaeology, geotechnical engineering, mining, ecology, environmental science, planning and permitting, and asset management
- Customize GIS workflow and software programs for data collection, engineering, and environmental applications.
- Design, develop, and maintain web applications deployed in ArcGIS Online using Experience Builder, Hub, and Story Maps
- Design, develop, and maintain field data collection solutions using Survey123, Field Maps, and Quick Capture
- Compile, manipulate, and refine geographic data from a variety of sources including, field collection, satellite/aerial imagery, public domain data, and existing maps.
- Provide technical 2D maps, apps, dashboards, and reports supporting proposals, projects, and internal initiatives collaborating with colleagues across multiple geographies
- Produce detailed, high-quality cartographic products and accompanying reports in accordance with technical guidelines and client needs. Responsible for quality assurance and control with adherence to global company standards, processes, and best practices
- Document procedures, workflows, and development activities
- Perform regular quality control checks of spatial and non-spatial datasets to ensure data integrity.
- Collaborate with team members on project tasks related to GIS, database design and management, and data visualization.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Key Qualifications / Competencies / Skills:
- Degree in GIS, Geography, Software Engineering, Environmental Science, or similar related field
- 3 to 4 years of relevant post-education experience with GIS and particularly Esri products (Esri ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS 10.X, and extensions, ArcGIS Online/Portal/WebApps) and basic GIS and CAD Data Formats, PostgreSQL/PostGIS[BW1] [MM2] .
- Understanding of coordinate transformations, projections, datums, precisions, accuracy, and the impacts that these have on the quality of deliverables
- Demonstrated experience with Esri’s web, SaaS, and mobile solutions for example: ArcGIS Online, Experience builder, Web Apps, Survey123, Field Maps, ArcGIS StoryMaps, etc.
- Demonstrated experience publishing and managing web hosted geospatial data through ArcGIS Pro
- Knowledge of best practices for sharing and securing data in a web GIS environment
- Experience in producing high-quality digital maps and project graphics. Strong cartographic skills including the ability to adhere to standards and communicate highly complex information in an accessible and attractive manner
- Working experience developing and implementing GIS solutions especially in the areas of productivity, Qualtiy Assurance & Quality Control (QA/QC), mobile data capture, geospatial analysis, spatial ETL and workflow automation
- Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
- Proficiency using Microsoft 365 tools including Word, Excel, SharePoint, Lists.
- Familiarity or experience with Microsoft Power Platform tools (BI, Automate, etc.)
- Knowledge of one or more programming / scripting languages (e.g. Python, Arcade, JavaScript, etc.) is an asset
- Familiarity with visualizing design data (e.g. CADD or BIM) in the web GIS environment is an asset
- Learning or experience with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning is an asset
- Experience with extended reality tools for environment and engineering applications
- Familiarity with other industry standards cloud based data management platforms (e.g. EQuIS, OpenGround Cloud, etc.) is an asset
- Experience in industry sectors and their sub-sectors like Earth and Environment, Infrastructure, Utility etc. is added advantage.
- Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek or office hours.
- Demonstrated experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team in a fast-paced deadline and deliverable oriented setting
- Proven ability to document and communicate work in a professional manner
