Role & responsibilities
1. Medication Dispensing:
- Assist pharmacists in dispensing prescription medications accurately and efficiently.
- Package, label, and organize medications for distribution to patients.
- Prepare and compound non-sterile medications, such as creams, ointments, and oral liquids, under the guidance of a pharmacist.
2. Customer Service:
- Greet and interact with customers in a courteous and professional manner.
- Answer phone calls and address customer inquiries about medications, dosage instructions, and over-the-counter products.
- Provide accurate information about the availability of medications and other pharmacy services.
3. Prescription Processing:
- Receive and input prescription information into the pharmacy's computer system.
- Verify insurance and patient information, ensuring accuracy and compliance with regulations.
- Assist with processing electronic prescriptions and contacting healthcare providers for clarification when needed.
4. Inventory Management:
- Maintain and organize pharmacy shelves, ensuring medications are properly stocked and labeled.
- Monitor inventory levels and assist with restocking medications and supplies.
- Rotate stock and check for expired or damaged medications, following proper disposal procedures.
5. Administrative Duties:
- Perform administrative tasks, such as filing, record keeping, and managing paperwork associated with prescription and non-prescription sales.
- Assist in maintaining patient profiles, updating contact information, and recording medication histories.
6. Medication Counseling:
- Provide basic information to patients about prescription and over-the-counter medications, including usage instructions, potential side effects, and storage recommendations.
- Direct patients to the pharmacist for more in-depth counseling and medication therapy management.
7. Patient Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to pharmacy regulations and guidelines, including those related to patient confidentiality (HIPAA) and controlled substances.
- Follow proper procedures for handling and disposing of medications in compliance with federal and state regulations.
