Safety Engineer

Roles and Responsibilities

1. Risk Assessment and Hazard Identification

• Conducting risk assessments to identify potential hazards and mitigate risks related to operations and activities.
• Identifying hazards specific to oil and gas operations, such as fire risks, explosion hazards, chemical exposure, machinery malfunctions, and environmental risks.
• Developing action plans to minimize the impact of identified hazards.

2. Safety Policies and Procedures Development

• Developing safety protocols and guidelines to be followed by all employees and contractors, based on industry standards and regulations.
• Ensuring compliance with both local and international safety regulations, such as OSHA, HSE (Health, Safety, Environment), and ISO standards.

3. Training and Awareness Programs

• Conducting safety training for employees, contractors, and other personnel to ensure they are aware of safety procedures, emergency response protocols, and correct handling of hazardous materials.
• Ensuring competency in the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), machinery, and safety gear.
• Providing emergency response drills such as fire, gas leak, or oil spill drills to prepare workers for potential accidents.

4. Monitoring and Inspection

• Inspecting facilities and work areas to ensure compliance with safety standards, regulations, and operational procedures.
• Performing regular audits and inspections to identify unsafe conditions and practices.
• Verifying proper maintenance of safety equipment, including fire extinguishers, alarms, and protective devices.

5. Accident Investigation and Reporting

• Investigating accidents or incidents to determine the root cause and prevent recurrence. This includes both minor and major incidents.
• Reporting incidents and ensuring that all accidents, injuries, or near misses are documented according to regulatory requirements.
• Providing recommendations for corrective actions to prevent similar incidents in the future.

6. Emergency Response Planning

• Developing emergency response plans for various potential emergencies, including fire, gas leaks, oil spills, and natural disasters.
• Coordinating with emergency services to ensure preparedness and quick response in the event of an emergency.
• Managing and leading emergency response teams during actual incidents, ensuring workers safety and effective containment or resolution of the situation.

7. Compliance and Legal Requirements

• Ensuring compliance with environmental, health, and safety laws and standards (local, national, and international).
• Monitoring new regulations to ensure that the company is always in compliance with the latest safety standards.
• Maintaining proper documentation and records of safety training, inspections, audits, and incident reports.

8. Reporting and Communication

• Reporting safety statistics and progress to senior management, ensuring that health and safety issues are addressed.
• Collaborating with management to establish safety goals and performance indicators.
• Promoting a safety culture across all levels of the organization through effective communication and leadership.

9. Environmental Protection

• Ensuring compliance with environmental protection standards, including spill prevention and response procedures, waste management, and pollution control.
• Minimizing environmental impact by promoting sustainable practices and adherence to environmental laws.
• Conducting environmental audits to assess compliance and prevent environmental hazards.

10. Continuous Improvement

• Evaluating safety performance and recommending improvements to safety systems and processes.
• Keeping up to date with industry developments and emerging risks in the oil and gas sector.
• Promoting a culture of safety by encouraging workers to report safety concerns, proactively participating in safety programs, and improving safety awareness at all levels.
