Job Title: Formulation & Packing Material Procurement Specialist Pharmaceutical

Department: Procurement / Supply Chain

Reports To: Procurement Manager / Supply Chain Manager

Job Overview:

The Formulation & Packing Material Procurement Specialist will be responsible for sourcing, evaluating, and managing the procurement of raw materials, packaging materials, and supplies, specifically in the pharmaceutical sector. This includes expertise in printing, paperboard, and other packaging materials essential for pharmaceutical formulations, with a primary focus on oral dosage forms. The role requires working closely with the production, quality assurance, regulatory affairs, and R&D teams to ensure cost-effective procurement of materials while ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Material Sourcing and Procurement:
    • Identify, evaluate, and source suppliers for packaging materials, including paperboard, printing materials, blister packs, bottles, labels, and other necessary pharmaceutical packaging.
    • Source packaging materials specifically tailored to oral dosage forms (tablets, capsules, syrups, etc.), ensuring materials meet regulatory and product formulation requirements.
    • Negotiate contracts and pricing with suppliers, ensuring cost-efficiency and maintaining quality.
    • Stay updated on emerging packaging materials and printing technologies that align with pharmaceutical industry trends and regulatory changes.
  2. Packaging and Printing Expertise:
    • Collaborate with the production and R&D teams to identify appropriate printing materials for packaging (such as label printing, heat-seal blister packs, etc.).
    • Source paperboard and packaging materials that meet stringent pharmaceutical quality standards (e.g., moisture protection, light sensitivity, tamper-evidence, and child-resistant packaging).
    • Work with suppliers to optimize printing methods, including flexographic, lithographic, and digital printing, ensuring high-quality, durable prints on packaging.
  3. Inventory Management:
    • Manage inventory levels of paperboard, packaging, and printing materials, ensuring there is no shortage or excess stock that could disrupt production.
    • Coordinate closely with the inventory management team to track material usage and lead times.
  4. Quality Assurance and Compliance:
    • Ensure all packaging materials comply with pharmaceutical regulations (such as GMP, FDA, and ICH guidelines).
    • Partner with the quality control and regulatory teams to ensure that all packaging, including labels and printed materials, meets safety standards and regulatory approvals.
    • Conduct regular supplier audits to ensure compliance with the required quality standards and specifications.
  5. Cost Control and Budget Management:
    • Monitor procurement costs for all packaging materials and strive for cost reduction without compromising quality.
    • Work closely with finance and procurement teams to develop and adhere to the budget for raw materials and packaging.
    • Analyze market trends to forecast material prices and reduce costs through strategic sourcing.
  6. Supply Chain Coordination:
    • Ensure timely delivery of materials to meet production schedules, with a focus on the pharmaceutical sector's unique packaging needs.
    • Resolve any supply chain disruptions that could impact production, focusing on packaging materials for oral dosage forms.
    • Develop and maintain procurement forecasts and timelines to ensure uninterrupted production.
  7. Collaboration with Internal Teams:
    • Work closely with R&D and production teams to source new and innovative packaging solutions that align with the specific needs of pharmaceutical products.
    • Collaborate with the regulatory team to ensure packaging complies with the necessary legal and labeling requirements.
    • Provide regular updates and feedback on supplier performance, material quality, and potential improvements in packaging design and functionality.
  8. Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain comprehensive records of all procurement activities, supplier communications, contracts, and packaging material specifications.
    • Generate reports related to procurement, material consumption, cost savings, and vendor performance.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelors degree in Supply Chain Management, Pharmaceutical Science,
  • Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in procurement or supply chain management, particularly in the pharmaceutical packaging sector.
  • Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of paperboard, printing, and packaging materials used in the pharmaceutical industry.
    • Familiarity with packaging materials for oral dosage forms (tablets, capsules, liquids).
    • Understanding of pharmaceutical regulations, including GMP, FDA, and ICH guidelines.
    • Proficient in vendor negotiations and supplier relationship management.
    • Ability to analyze and forecast material costs and trends within the pharmaceutical packaging industry.
    • Excellent communication, organizational, and project management skills.

Key Competencies:

  • Detail-oriented with a strong ability to manage multiple procurement activities.
  • Proficient in sourcing high-quality packaging materials while ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with R&D, quality assurance, and production teams.
