N- methylation of 1°&2°-amines can be achieved by performing Eschweiller-Clarke reaction, i.e. treatment of 1°/2°-amine with Formaldehyde and Formic acid.

2° amine can give N,N-dimethyl amine if Excess of above reagents are used.
