Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: Fairly simple questions to be done in the time limit made it a reasonably good test to filter. There was a MCQ test with 15 questions(30min) followed by 2 programming questions(1hr) . The time for coding was ample while that for MCQ was apt.
Tips: Just brush the concepts of pointers, guess the output kind of questions. Basic sorting algorithms. Revision of the graph theory related algorithms will help you through out the selection process(both coding and MCQs).
Duration: 90 min minutes
Total Questions: 15+2

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: It was a beautifully constructed knapsack problem. They would want to see the way you approach the problem rather than the solution. They would help you if you are stuck.
Tips: Just stay cool , don't try to classify problem into the theorems or similar problems that you have come across before, rather see how you can approach, basically don't be in a hurry to apply all that you know.
Duration: 40min minutes

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Popular questions again, they were particular about writing proper code and not just the pseudo code.
Tips: Just revise what you've done already if you are from cs, for non-cs I would advice to get thorough with standard things in graph theory , with coding as well theory , helps quite a lot.

Round: Behavioural Interview
Experience: The person that was interviewing was trying to discourage me by not paying attention

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: The topic was a bit surprising as it is a totally unrelated one. But Vodafone , through its discover program , offers managerial role, so the arbitrary choice is justified. Frankly , I didn't know the meaning of Jugaad back then, but was able to pick it up as the discussion proceeded. I started slow , waited for my moments , and was never aggressive. I didn't speak much , but I spoke the right stuff at the right time and that is what mattered.
Tips: 1) Be confident and make sure you are audible. Talk as if you own the room and the game is in your pocket2) Stick with your point. Give plausible reasons for your stand and don't blabber random stuff3) If you feel the discussion is getting out of scope, try to bring stability to the group. Also try to resolve any arguments , as it might affect the entire group.4) "NEVER" speak when another person is talking. Respect other's viewpoints. But make sure that you get to speak.5)

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: On campus, I was selected for Wipro Technologies. Not very satisfied with the work at Wipro, I applied off campus to Schlumberger on their career website. The website contains videos and letters from current Field Engineer explaining the work and their life style. During the year 2013, Schlumberger had secured a mega contract in India and were recruiting heavily. It was one of a kind opportunity, as Schlumberger never recruits off campus. The resume was uploaded on their career website, with many other details that companies generally ask like, about education, prior work experience, hometown, languages known and hobbies. After a wait of around 2 months, I finally recieved a mail from the company HR inviting me to the interview process in Mumbai.
Tips: For graduates with very little or no experience, a 1 page resume should be good enough. SLB looks at everything. They want the recruits for position of field engineer to be all rounders in different fields. A candidate with decent academic record and proven ability of managerial/ leadership skills has a good shot at getting through the resume selection process.
In short (not mandatory)
- CGPA > 7
- Positions of Responsibilities
- Extracurriculars - Can include anything dance, sports, music, mimicry, art, etc.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: There were more than 200 people interviewing the same day. Ofcourse, the first round would be Group Discussion followed by Personal Interview. The India HR head gave a presentation about Schlumberger, explaining the work it does, the regions it operates in and also provided an overview of the typical field engineer profile. Following this, we were divided into groups of 10.
Tips: Mostly Schlumberger gives very abstract topics to candidates for the group discussion. Most of these abstract topics are rather equipment or places or things that are work related in SLB. Platform for example, is a place where the oil drilling and productions happens. The topic however and what you say is not very important. During the entire group discussion, try to be productive as a team. Bring creative and new ideas to the table, and extend or elaborate on what other says. They also look for people who take on the role of leadership during the group discussion. Classic GD fundaes apply.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: It was a simple HR interview with the most important question being "Tell me about yourself". I was being interviewed by two ladies, one was the India HR Head and the other India Equipment Assurance manager. Both big shots. I had prepared very hard for this interview and was very confident about cracking it from the very start. To my surprise, the HR head was a Civil Engineer herself and took deep interest in my final year project. I elaborated and explained her the entire thing. She was happy. Then they moved to ask my why SLB and question on about my interest in working as field engineer. From the career website, I had great idea about what SLB engineers did. Many other website on recruitment and oil and gas, explained in detailed about how the tough it could be in the field. I had also read blogs from many ex-SLB engineers. All in all, I proved to have a good understanding of what SLB + engineers do in the field, and how demanding the job can be. This I guess, confirmed my seat.
Tips: Prepare well like you would for any interview. SLB interviews are the most relaxed ones you will attend across any industry. It is a simple HR round, where the recruiters are understanding you and what drives you. They are looking people who are ready to push their limits, work hard and be extraordinary achievers. Being associated to some leadership role in university, playing sports or having a keen hobby can be a good talking point during the interview. SLB also really looks to hire interesting people.
SLB hires people for the long run. They want people to stick it out in the field for 3-4 years and then they promote every one to managers. Know the job profile in and out by speaking to seniors, reading on their website and other blogs. During the interview show interest in learning about the what the 3-4 years in the field will look like. Ask several questions on segment, training, field experience, compensation, etc.
It is a tough job out in the field, and not every one can do it. Many people struggle after joining the company and quit after the 1st year of just training. It demands long working hours, sometimes physical work and always a lot of troubleshooting.

General Tips: Be confident during the entire interview process. Know what you are getting into as field engineer. Explain the interviewers why you will be a good fit as field engineer in the super demanding conditions.
Skills: Leadership, Technical Understanding, Learning Ability
College Name: IIT Madras
Motivation: Money. Lifestyle. Go International. Brand Name. Work.
Funny Moments: There have been plenty ups and downs in the past 3 memorable years. Do not regret ever that I joined SLB.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: I had done a couple of finance projects, one internship in a VC firm and published a paper at IIM Calcutta. All this excited the interviewer and he started grilling me about various questions related to the course projects, generally about basic terms in finance and about my internship. These answers I had well prepared and hence were smooth to answer. But what was unexpected is where it would lead to once you answer the initial set of questions. I was asked to explain Eurozone debt crisis in simple language. I had also given CFA and FRM level 1 exams and there were a few questions related to risk management and portfolio investment.

PS: Please note that since I had done so many things related to the core work at JP Morgan I was asked a lot of questions in core finance. IT IS NOT AT ALL NECESSARY that you will be asked the same questions.
Tips: Know the basics really well. It goes a long way if you know the concepts crystal clear. You can watch a few videos that explain the various crises and why they happened on Youtube. ( I have put up the links in the preparation material section). Be confident and if you don't know the answer, be straightforward to tell that you are not aware of that or maybe even have forgotten at the moment. Honesty helps! The interviewer can always guide you if you are stuck somewhere so ensure you attempt to answer or atleast get closer to the answer. Many a times they want to look into or analyze your thought process rather than getting the correct exact answer itself!

Round: Problem Statement
Experience: It should be easy if your fundamentals are really clear. The case as such does not matter much since the positives and negatives of different valuation models are pretty much well known. I showed on how i arrived at the number using the Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) Valuation model and Comparative Comparison Valuation model. They also wanted to check on how well you write and are able to put out on paper as this was a Junior Analyst interview for a Equity Research Analyst role.
Tips: Revise the various types of valuation models well and know the assumptions correctly. Models could get really complex sometimes but you should be clear with how you get at the final number and be able to explain it easily. Conceptually this is very interesting. This pretty much forms the basics of a lot of concepts in finance.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: This was a simple round. Usually you know the HR round questions already and hence you know how you could answer and even manipulate and steer the interview in your favour. Ensure you are clear with basic questions about how you got interested in this field and why you would like to pursue finance as a career option and not your core field (in my case it was civil engineering). A clear and simple story with facts shows that you have prepared well for the interview and have something concrete to say. So do prepare for these kind of questions and don't take them lightly.
Tips: Practice out loud alone and with your friends and take feedback. Most of the times you would yourself realize that you have not answered in the best way possible. But at the same time do not push yourself so much that you get confused at the end moment. Keep a good balance. Try writing down points on a piece of paper and then frame them accordingly on the spot. It always better to know the important points instead of "mugging up an answer". A good interviewer can always tell the difference.
Preparation for this round actually helps you connect with your inner self and you start to ask yourself why you think you deserve this job and why this is a very good bet as a career option. Hence do go through this exercise atleast a few times! :)

General Tips: In my case I had prepared a lot from various resources. I have put it out in detail in the previous section section.
CFA and FRM exams helped a lot for building a strong foundation but more importantly you actually need to be passionate about financial markets, how investment banks function, know the work details about your job profile and be excited about finance in general.
Do not try and put things in resume that you think will "look" very good but you wouldn't be able to explain it thoroughly. The job is very demanding and requires long working hours, so be prepared for it. Know some basic numbers like GDP of top economies, population, interest rates, valuations, etc so that even if you guess things it should sound reasonable.
Skill Tips: The best way to prepare would be actually building financial models, doing an internship in a financial services firm and getting a first hand experience of all the above. Theory part can be understood through CFA or FRM Level 1 books which pretty much cover the basics of finance.
Skills: Financial Modeling, Valuations, Mergers & Acquisitions, Basics of stock market, Portfolio Management, Risk Management
College Name: IIT MADRAS
Motivation: I was very keen to work at an Investment Bank. I had given CFA and FRM Level 1 and it had got me very excited about financial markets in general. I was trading part time and thoroughly enjoyed it. JP Morgan being one of the largest and most reputed Investment Banks I thought would give me exposure to various facets of equity research and thus improve my knowledge and understanding about markets. Also I was referred by my senior Kartheek Konanki who was an alum of IIT-Madras and the idea of having working with a lot of colleagues from various IITs excited me.
Funny Moments: I was asked a lot of questions about the movies I had seen like Wall Street, Boiler room and was asked to explain what happened to which character and why ? and that was not expected :P But they did make me comfortable and referred me other movies and books that would make learning all the more interesting. Net-net I think the interview had its fair share of ups and downs :D
