Company says very openly about premiumisation and selling quality over quantity. However USL's main product McDowell's no. 1 is not a premium whisky and while no. 1 is the most sold whisky in India, USL does not see a long future in McDowell's. As such it is closing a no. of factories and retrenching many workers. It even sold a lotof smaller less profitable brands. The overall strength of the company has been cut by 70% in the last 10 years alone and company closing so many factories with more in pipeline. As one of the senior managers put it USL leadership does not have a clue on what to do with iconic brands like McDowell's.
