It is great to be working at ECHS as a Doctor, specially if you are in your second inings of your life( post retirement) after your First career. Gives great professional satisfaction as one not only gets to treat all varieties of chronically ill patients, mostly Senior citizens but, most importantly the Armed Forces Vetrans, who have given their youth for the safety of the Nation. Professionally, you are treating patients with acute on multiple chronic illnesses & therefore one has to take into account multiple drug interactions, which can be quite challenging. Great professional satisfaction also comes when as a Dr you are able to introduce alternative therapies like diet modifications, yoga, physiotherapy, exercise protocalls, etc to reduce the intake of the number of medicines & still show improvement in the patients physiology, motivation & overall Health....Read More

Dislikes

The workload on each Dr is very high. Each Dr in most of the big Polyclinics has to see 90 - 150/ patients per day. Most cases with multiple complications. Relatively, the doctors are paid very less. The Doctors need to be paid muchmore.

Its a Defence organisation run by Retired & serving Defence employees. You get a chance to serve the retired Defence Vetrans & their families who have given their youth towards the safety of the Nation. Serving these desciplined lot is the biggest satisfaction.

Dislikes

1)The work load on Doctors is quite high in some places ( seeing more than 100 patients per day) with patients having multiple diseases/ disabilities needs time & concentration, which is not available at the doctor's disposal. 2) Shortage of Medicines is a routine practice. 3) Funds scarcity is there most of the time. 4) Timely payment is not made to the referral hospitals & other referral centres. As a result, most hospitals / labs go out of empanellment & have to be reempanelled after making their dues /payments. This process takes quite a few months. During this period, the Patients ( Vetrans & their families), are really neglected as they do not know which hospital to go for treatment. This is really pitiable. Even routine Cancer treatment gets disrupted due to civil hospitals refusing to treat patients due to non payment of their pending bills. 5) Officer i/cs are non medico officers who are from different branches of the Armed Forces. They do not understand or take longer to appreciate as to how the Medical System / services operate & the difficulties faced by Doctors & Patients. In my opinion, the Officer i/cs of all ECHS Polyclinics should also be from Medical Branch . 6) Civilian Doctors should be employed only if there are no retired AMC Doctors available. AMC doctors Dentists & other Para Medical staff should be given First Priority to work at all ECHS establishments. 7) A lot has gone into planning & starting of the ECHS system. A lot more needs to be done & therefore the organisation needs people who can appreciate the futuristic needs, consider the ever changing dynamics in this field & do some meticulous , futuristic planning. This can be best done only by Senior people from the field of medicine, who are well verse with Healthcare & who can bring on the table a wealth of their experience and wisdom....Read More
