Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Co. (SMCC) is a general construction company that also provides architectural and civil engineering services. The company is involved in the construction of public works such as highways, bridges, and power plant facilities in Japan. It was named one of the top 200 international contractors in 2008 by Engineering News-Record. Although construction is the company's main focus, SMCC also develops and sells real estate. Another division manages elderly care facilities. The company was created in 2003 by the merger of Mitsui Construction Co. and Sumitomo Construction Co. amid a prolonged economic slump in Japan's construction market. Japan's Daiwa Securities owns the company.
