Controlling Leakage Power
- Leakage power is a critical challenge faced by IC designers, affecting power, performance, area, and reliability.
- Various types of leakage like parasitic, analog gate, and digital gate leakage pose long-term reliability and power performance risks.
- Strategies to address leakage include removing improper states and unreliable outcomes to reduce high current drain.
- Digital gate leakage can lead to power management issues and low reliability due to floating or under-driven inputs.
- An understanding of power domain complexities, UPF states, and circuit size impacts is crucial for leakage control.
- Implementing a 'shift-left' mindset with advanced EDA tools can identify and resolve leakage issues early in the design process.
- Tools like Insight Analyzer facilitate early analysis of leakage risks between power domains and other circuit reliability issues.
- Contending and domain leakage checks help identify conflicting power switch controls and parasitic diodes causing leakage currents.
- The STMicroelectronics case study demonstrates the effectiveness of Insight Analyzer in detecting and addressing circuit issues.
- Mitigating leakage challenges is crucial for improving design reliability, performance, and quality in semiconductor technology.
