Ionna Says We Need Chargers Where ‘Reliability Isn’t Even A Question'
- Ionna, the charging network founded by eight auto brands, worked with the community to redevelop an old Phillips 66 gas station into the first of its “Chargery” locations in Apex, North Carolina. The first of six Ionna sites that will be open by early February—and 100 by the end of 2025, providing more than 1,000 charging cables. The network intends to have 30,000 cables by the end of 2030, putting it among the largest North American charging networks.
- A major part of the Ionna brand is to provide amenities, which are still lacking in most other EV charging companies, like 24-hour bathrooms in a sheltered space with seating and vending machines, squeegees to clean the windows, bins for any trash and an air hose to fill tires if needed.
- There will three basic formats for Ionna sites: Rechargery Beacon sites, which will offer the most amenities and many with larger footprints and more charging cables; Rechargery Relay sites that represent the core offering for relay sites, called a “relay” concept; and selected retail partners, providing charging stations under a canopy, with the bathrooms and snacks provided by partner store.
- There are currently 50 Ionna sites confirmed across the east and midwestern United States with Sheetz convenience stores but major problem Ionna faces is its almost total lack of brand awareness.
- The Apex site has 10 charging stations, with potential for later expansion to 12 or even 15 slots if needed. Every cable can provide up to 400 Kilowatts and supports both CCS and NACS connectors.
- The backgrounds of Ionna’s staff and execs underscore that reliability is key to Ionna’s success, virtually all of them have relevant prior experience at other charging networks, or within the charging software groups at partner carmakers.
- Ionna CEO Seth Cutler bluntly stated that the company hopes to be what charging should have always been and its opening marks the starting point for a nationwide charging network, which it claims will put charging everywhere drivers live, work and travel.
- Ionna’s sites are meant to appeal more like rest stops with a touch of Americana hospitality to make drivers feel at ease as they charge their vehicle.
- The opening comes as the new EV era is beginning in earnest, and the introduction of new affordable long-range EVs make owning an electric vehicle a cheaper alternative.
