Astronomers discover Quipu, the largest known structure in the universe
- Astronomers have identified the largest known structure in the universe, called Quipu, that is 1.3 billion light years across, or more than 13,000 times the length of the Milky Way. Quipu contains 200 quadrillion times the mass of the sun, making it one of most massive cosmic formations observed by researchers from the Max Planck Institute. Scientists have created more complete cosmic maps using galaxy clusters as tracers of the universe's mass distribution and X-ray observations from surveys like CLASSIX. In the region 400 to 815 million light years away, researchers have found not only Quipu but four other superstructures. Together, these five contain 45% of known galaxy clusters, 30% of observable galaxies and 25% of the universe's matter occupying 13% of its volume.
- These structures distort surrounding space by their immense gravitational pull and affect measurements of the Hubble constant, the rate of the universe’s expansion. They also impact the cosmic microwave background and highlight the need for precise cosmological models. By studying these superstructures, researchers can work towards comprehending the fundamental forces that shape the universe.
- These superstructures serve as laboratories for studying galaxy evolution, large-scale gravitational interactions, and the effects of dark matter on cosmic formation. But despite their staggering size, superstructures such as Quipu aren't permanent fixtures of the cosmos. Over billions of years, they will gradually break down into smaller structures and individual galaxy clusters will drift away from each other.
- The discovery of Quipu and its counterparts marks a turning point in our understanding of cosmic architecture. Additionally, knowing where these cosmic super structures are can help scientists in their search for dark matter, the mysterious, unseen substance that is believed to constitute 85% of matter in the universe.
- Astronomers have worked for decades to map the universe's large-scale structure by direct mapping and statistically. Direct mapping provides insight into distinct structures and interactions of cosmic super structures and is essential for precise measurement of cosmological parameters.
- Density maps of the 2MASS galaxy distribution in the redshift interval of 0.03 to 0.06 and the Cosmic Flow velocity compilations have allowed astronomers to map the universe out to a redshift of approximately 0.03, or around 400 million light-years.
- The 2MASS redshift survey and Cosmic Flow surveys have provided extensive data within this region, the span between redshifts 0.03 and 0.06, or roughly 425 million to 815 million light-years away.
- While the universe is expanding, galaxies have local motions due to gravitational interactions. These peculiar velocities, must be accounted for, when measuring cosmic expansion, and the enormous gravitational fields of superstructures can alter these motions, leading to discrepancies in Hubble constant calculations.
- The discovery of Quipu and its counterparts unveils the mysteries of the largest and powerful formations in the universe. Quipu is a transient configuration, but at present, they are special physical entities with characteristic properties, special cosmic environments and deserving special attention.
