For an individual woman or girl, being able to choose when she has children means having the power to take control of her future. It can mean having the ability to finish her education, pursue a career, look after the children she already has and ensure she remains healthy. Marie Stopes International was founded in 1976 to provide the contraception and safe abortion services that give women and girls a choice. Since then, choice has been at the heart of everything that we do and our mission remains clear: to help women and girls to have children by choice, not chance. Marie Stopes International is a global organisation with 11,000 team members working in 37 countries to deliver our mission. Starting from one single clinic in London, our organisation has grown from one clinic in central London to become one of the world’s largest providers of high quality, affordable contraception and safe abortion services. Over the last 40 years, we have touched the lives of more than 120 million women and girls, giving them the power to take control of their futures. But we know that there is much more to do, today there are 214 million women who want to use contraception but can't and that number continues to grow. We're committed to delivering the services that those 214 million women want and need. But we're also committed to delivering the services that their daughters and granddaughters will need: we're here for the long-term. To do that we need to make sure that access to contraception and safe abortion is affordable for women and national governments in 2017, 2020, 2030 and beyond. It's why sustainability is such a key part of our Scaling-Up Excellence organisational strategy.
