The DeepSeek threat: India may have a GPU problem and it needs to act fast
- India has set an ambitious target to build a large language model (LLM) and invited proposals from startups and researchers to collaborate on building state-of-the-art foundational AI models trained on Indian datasets, however, achieving this goal will depend on aligning hardware capabilities with AI research. The country’s existing data centre infrastructure isn’t equipped to handle the intense computational requirements of large-scale AI training and must rapidly invest in AI-optimised infrastructure offering pre-configured GPU-ready offerings that cater to larger AI workloads. Despite the GPU stockpile, the US government has placed export restrictions on GPUs sold to India, capped at 50k and may limit the capability of Indian players. For India to achieve AI ambitions, there is an urgent requirement to scale-up GPU capacity and invest in developing the talent and resources to provide cheaper access to GPUs, so that accepting the status quo is not an option.
- The Union minister of electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced plans to develop India’s own foundational AI model as part of IndiaAI Mission’s target to build a LLM in less than a year.
- India has exceeded its original target of procuring 10,000 GPUs and currently maintains a fleet of more than 15,000 high-end GPU units including several Nvidia H100 and H200 chips purpose-built for AI infrastructure and workload, and those offered by AMD.
