Automotive Security Shifts To The System Level
- As the amount of semiconductor and software content continues to increase, so does the number of over-the-air updates and connections to edge-based servers and services, adding a variety of new vectors for attacks.
- Properly securing vehicles requires engineers to first identify all the possible connection points.
- In the strictest sense, there’s only one direct attack vector on a car, according to David Glasco, vice president for compute solutions group at Cadence — the WiFi through which all software updates are uploaded.
- The migration toward holistic security now includes roots of trust installed in ICs located throughout the car’s systems.
- “Security is just like safety,” he said. “Security is the ultimate. It is the top priority.
- The challenge for automakers is understanding how these systems of systems will behave both individually and together, and that may require security training as a pre-requisite for any facet of automotive design.
- SDVs are booming, but designing hardware that can run software updates a decade in the future is a huge challenge.
- The core of all security comes down to proper, strong cryptography.
- “Having multiple environments is very similar to having different privilege levels within the CPU structure, which allows you to assign a very low privilege, for example, to a third-party app,” he said.
- The international standard has been proven effective in automotive functional safety and has begun to spread to other markets.

A Bluetooth LE Throughput Faceoff
- Competitors blog compares their Bluetooth LE MCU, and one line that everyone can agree on, throughput is king and is the most typical metric for measuring Bluetooth LE’s relevance in any given application.
- In this faceoff between Cypress Semiconductors’ AIROC CYW20829 Bluetooth LE MCU and an anonymous Competitor N, the goal was to facilitate a side-by-side throughput comparison.
- The contest took place in the middle of a noisy office environment to mimic a real-world scenario where data does battle with interference and other factors that limit data transfer speed.
- At the end of the tests, AIROC CYW20829 Bluetooth LE MCU came out miles ahead of the anonymous Competitor N.
- The superior throughput performance was down to a variety of factors including the maximum output power from the CYW20829 of 10 dBm compared to the Competitor N’s 8 dBm.
- Another factor was an optimized adaptive frequency hopping algorithm called AFH which made it better at avoiding interference in noisy channels.
- The receiver sensitivity of the devices could also have an impact, with the CYW20829 able to detect signals as weak as -98 dBm.
- The connection interval was one area that was explored and was found to have a significant effect on throughput.
- For this experiment, a 400 ms connection interval was used for the sake of compatibility between the two devices.
- CYW20829 shows a wide-reaching green center with little to no red in either modulation. On the other hand, our Competitor N, in comparison, has a receiver sensitivity of -95 dBm in the LE 1M modulation and -92 dBm in the LE 2M modulation.
