Trump Freezes EV Charger Funding And Nobody Is Happy About It
- President Trump's administration ordered an immediate freeze to America's federally-funded electric vehicle charger rollout last week. That is not something that many regional businesses are happy about. The move fits the Trump administration's pattern of halting funding by Congress, a move many legal experts say flouts the law. And while the NEVI program has its issues, nearly everyone in the transportation space will tell you that not investing here, or leaving it all purely up to market demand, will put the US behind rivals like China.
- Now that the planned Honda-Nissan merger seems to be off the table, Nissan may be looking for other merger opportunities. Automotive News reports Nissan is in self-rescue mode.
- Several European automakers warn their investors of a tough environment for 2025, stating that tariffs, still-high interest rates, a slowdown on EV incentives and charger funding, among others, might render hard times on automakers in the continent.
- The NEVI program was working, slowly but surely, and it was an integral part of the charger rollout for many companies. Many different groups are urging the Trump administration to reconsider the NEVI funding freeze. Those include automakers like General Motors and Toyota, fuel retailers and gas station owners like EVGo and Walmart. Michigan is already among the states that have paused the program and is working with the federal government to determine what this means for contracts in various stages of agreement and construction already in progress.
- All automakers hope for regulatory certainty: to know what kinds of cars they have to make, at what rate, and what support will they get to actually sell the electrified vehicles of tomorrow? In the US, all that has now been thrown into a tizzy.
- Car companies, charging companies, electric utilities, gas station owners, Tesla and others may be the first to fire legal attacks on the Trump administration's decision to freeze the federally funded electric vehicle charger rollout. Yet, experts say any policy inconsistency on EV will throw the automobile industry into a tizzy at a time when it's trying to make the cars of the future.
- NATSO and SIGMA - America's Leading Fuel Marketers - are responding to the Federal Highway Administration's announcement that it will suspend approval of state electric vehicle infrastructure deployment plans under the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) grant program.
- Porsche warned investors that profits this year will slow as it will need to invest in new models with internal combustion power, as well as plug-in hybrids, which will send costs higher and weigh on its margin. Cost related to the expansion of customization capabilities, battery development, and its corporate organization will also rise this year.
- Volvo is warning of hypercompetition and an uncertain road ahead in terms of the demand for electrified cars. The company also added that the costs needed to make such cars are increasing.
- Experts say that nearly everyone in the transportation space will tell you that not investing in the NEVI program or leaving it up to market demand alone puts the US behind the rivals like China. It could promote questions over how the US government plans on spearheading EV growth, as the rest of the energy industry takes massive strides to advance renewable energy adoption, particularly through the use of EV as a key gateway sector.

Robotaxis are a brutally expensive business. This CEO aims to make them much cheaper.
- CEO of May Mobility, Edwin Olson, has stated that robotaxis are a “brutal” business due to the high cost of scaling up autonomous ride-hailing services is leading companies to withdraw from the industry.
- May Mobility runs autonomous vehicle services in 10 cities across North America and Japan and has mostly focused on long-term public transport contracts with businesses and governments, allowing the company to make money on nearly all of its US sites.
- Concerns over the huge cost of self-driving vehicles have been highlighted by the exit of both Ford and GM from the race.
- A McKinsey study found robotaxis could cost about $8.20 per mile to run, and a recent Bernstein analysis estimated that the cars cost roughly $150,000 each.
- May Mobility claims to offer the market's autonomous vehicles that have the lowest price point.
- May Mobility is set to enter the robotaxi market this year, deploying its robotaxis on the Lyft app in Atlanta within the coming months.
- Elon Musk's Tesla plans to release its own robotaxi service in Austin in June.
- The presence of President Donald Trump could result in federal-level regulatory standards, aiding the robotaxi industry.
- The long-awaited arrival of self-driving cars has put Ford and General Motors offside due to the sheer expense and estimated decade-long-lead time to reach break-even points.
- Widespread adoption of autonomous vehicles is being hampered by standards, legal issues, cybersecurity outcomes, ethical considerations, citizen concerns, and likely liability issues.
