The new safety regulation that’s killing multiple models in Australia
- A federal government regulation mandating specific technical requirements for autonomous emergency braking (AEB) systems in new cars is being blamed for the discontinuation of multiple models.
- Australian Design Rule 98/00 requires all newly launched models from March 1, 2023 to follow specific AEB requirements.
- Now, this regulation will apply to all vehicles on sale from March 1, 2025.
- Petrol-powered Fiat 500 and Abarth 595 hatchbacks don’t comply with either ADR.
- Mahindra’s Pik-Up ute and Scorpio large SUV both lack any form of AEB.
- Mazda 6 sedan and wagon production for our market has already ended.
- Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross small SUV and Pajero Sport large SUV being axed as their AEB systems didn’t meet the standards outlined in ADR 98/00.
- Suzuki Australia managing director Michael Pachota confirmed they’ve reached the end of their local lifecycles.
- Suzuki has confirmed that Jimny 3-Door currently does not meet the newly introduced ADR requirements, however investigations in overcoming this are already at play.
- Hybrid versions of the Vitara and S-Cross will be the subject of a Q3 announcement.

2025 Fiat Grande Panda review: Quick drive
- Fiat has reimagined its popular model as an electric and hybrid crossover named Grande Panda. At 3.99 meters long, it falls in the compact crossover class. In Italy, it has a starting price of €16,950 for the 1.2-litre hybrid model. It is designed as a global model, with Fiat Australia yet to confirm whether it will bring it to its shores. Its interior has supportive seats, good climate controls and enough room for passengers. Only one engine is available for the electric model, with an 83kW output and a 43.8kWh battery. The hybrid model uses a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine combined with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.
- Fiat is yet to add the model to Australia’s market, though it stands out from the crowd with its design and nifty features such as a built-in charging cable. The Panda nearly ticks all the boxes in terms of functionality too, with comfortable rear seats and a modest-sized boot.
- The Grande Panda is powered by an 83kW electric motor and a 43.8kWh LFP battery, which offers a range of 320km. It has a sprint time of 11.5 seconds to reach 100kph from rest and weighs just 1554kg. Technical specs include a pixel LED daytime running lights and a built-in spiral charging cable.
- The interior comes equipped with a 10-inch digital instrument display, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, cruise control, a reversing camera and speed limiter. The cabin climate controls feature physical buttons for measured climate changes, and it also has basic driver assistance systems.
- The Fiat Grande Panda is relatively affordable, with a modest price range of €16,950 for the 1.2-litre hybrid model. With no official assessment by the Euro NCAP yet, the outgoing Panda scored poorly with zero-star ratings.
- It has a relatively low but an affordable battery capacity, which makes it more reliable for the daily commute. Longer ranges of use over extended periods will dent the battery. For those curious about the hybrid model, Fiat quotes a combined consumption figure of 5.4l/100km with CO2 emissions of 123g per km.
- Short shifts and low speeds around town are the Fiat Grande Panda's optimal conditions, which create a smooth, hassle-free ride with light steering. The ride may feel busy at times, with some audible warnings for exceeding speed limits. The driving experience is relatively uneventful, and the ride quality is on par with its segment.
- For now, the Fiat Grande Panda in the market is only sold in Europe in two equipment variants; the electric model is sold in La Prima and RED. The Fiat Grande Panda electric runs on 83kW and 43.8kWh lithium-ion phosphate (LFP), while the hybrid model is sold in Pop, Icon and La Prima.
- The Grande Panda’s boxy shape benefits the passengers by providing adequate legroom and headroom. The rear seats have 60:40 split, with enough space for two average-sized adults.
- Fiat could add a smaller battery to the Grande Panda, making it more affordable and a larger battery for longer ranges. The Grande Panda's suspension system could be softer, depending on the preference of the driver.
- Despite being a compact crossover, the Grande Panda's cabin is airy and spacious. Polycarbonate panels used on the car reflects the factory's famous oval rooftop test track in Turin. The designers have put considerable effort into making the interior refreshingly good, with polycarbonate panel, luminous yellow on the air vents and centre console; and blue-and-white dash plastics.
